In 1526, two years before Durer's death, Beatus Rhenanus (ca. 1485-1547) in his notes on Pliny's Historia Naturalis pointed with pride to the fact that "as in days of the Ancients" Germany now excelled in the visual arts that "bear witness to a nation's honor," and that first among German artists was Albrecht Durer.
