I thought that the recent recording by Marc Andre Hamelin was the ultimate performance of Iberia until I heard this, in spite of the rather elderly, but still vivid, recording. She understands what the music is about better than anyone, and her astounding tehcnique allows her to achieve colours that no-one else even imagines. Brilliant and moving

This pair of discs offers recently remastered presentations of the early 1960's readings by Larrocha. The remastering has been noticeably successful and the piano sound has an appealing freshness and believable timbre. Since making these recordings Larrocha has remade her recordings for Decca which are highly thought of and then a later set for RCA wh

ich are not considered to be the equal of the Decca set.

So what should the collector to make of these alternatives?

Firstly it can be generally agreed that Larrocha has made such a speciality of these works that she can reasonably be said to have cornered the market. Up until recently I would have suggested that the Decca set, especially in its twin package, offered the best possible option. However, I am indebted to Raymond Clarke, a fellow reviewer, for drawing my attention to this earlier EMI set which he prefers. I subsequently, and without delay, bought this EMI set and I can absolutely concur with his assessment that this set is the one to have if only one is to be chosen.

The reasons are clear enough. As so often happens, first artistic attempts are often the most spontaneous while subsequent attempts seek to improve on an excellent initial viewpoint. This can lead to greater sophistication at the cost of the earlier spontaneity. That is what occurs here.

At almost every point throughout all these works the playing has a freshness of vision that lifts the recording into the sensation of a 'live' performance. Accenting, a very important feature in Spanish music especially, is sharper and more defined without becoming in any way overwhelming. The considerable amount of lyrical music has just that extra degree of flexibility that allows the melodic line to 'sing' just that bit more.
