I became a fan of Alan Titchmarsh when I read one of his books, "How to be a Gardener" and he hasn't disappointed me ever since! His books are aimed at the enthusiastic but clueless gardener who would like not only an introduction but also a book he or she can refer to later again, and this ticks all the boxes. It gives you an overview over the different tree types, things to consider before planting, where and how to plant them (in a container or directly into the earth), pruning...everything one can think of!
There are lots of pictures to show you how it's done and the descriptions are very clear. This is a book one can refer to again and again and that is equally useful for the beginner as well as the advanced gardener.
Buy this before you consider to plant any small tree, it will save you lots of work and hassle!

This series is a wonderfully helpful guide for all types of gardeners - new and those slightly more mature! It recommends small trees of every type for the soil, position and overall effect in your garden. Also suggests other types of plant to partner and enhance the display. I am creating a new garden but it would be equally helpful to those people who just want to add something special to an existing one. Lovely clear photographs and instructions. Well done Alan Titchmarsh.

More and more reference is required when making your mind up about trees - hopefully they'll be with us for a long time. And, as they aren't cheap it makes more financial sense to read as much as possible so mistakes can be minimised!
