This is set out in a very clear way which is rarer than you'd think in a reference book. Whilst the chapters on planting & propogation are very similar to the ones in other books the sections on types of shade, microclimates and designing for shade were good, simple & easily understandable. The 'plants for shade' section is excellent; set out in exactly the way that makes sense and as a consequence is becoming really well thumbed already. If you are trying to sort out a problem area of garden this is a brilliant book. Mr Titchmarsh writes with the openess of someone who knows his subject thoroughly & is happy to help & share as opposed to the many gardener writers who try to blind you with science in attempt to reinforce their (obvious) sense of superiority.

This is a very good book for what it is explaining I have recently cleared a corner of my garden that has parts in shade. The book gives lots of varieties of plants that will do well in shade and partial shade not just the usual foliage plants ie Hostas that everyone says.
I am looking forward to trying some of the varieties listed over the next year.
