Review

A remarkable autobiography, certainly one that makes a mockery of those appalling cheap cash-ins so beloved of football, usually based upon some dimwitted millionaire who has little to tell beyond how he kicks a ball for a generous living.

Alan's lived it, endured it, been kicked when he's down by it, and, against more than a few odds, survived it.

And the riches to rags roller-coaster that was his life in the paddock proves a real page-turner.

Overall, though, this is heartbreakingly honest, and Alan has taken us on a dark journey into fame and fortune's flip side.

Again, remarkable. --RICHARD CLARK, Editor, Speedway Star

"Wow! A great read. You never know how good you had it until you read what this family was all about."
--BRUCE PENHALL, World Champion 1981 & 1982

Product Description

ALAN CARTER became a motorcycle racing sensation at 18, winning his first Grand Prix in France - the youngest-ever GP winner and one of only three Brits to finish on the MotoGP podium for more than 20 years.

His best season was 1985, when he finished seventh in the 250cc World Championship, and went on to compete in 54 GPs until 1990.

No-one doubted he had the talent to go all the way to the top but failed to fulfil his enormous potential for numerous reasons.

In Light in the Darkness, Halifax-born Alan reveals the intimate truth behind his meteoric rise and fall and all the many contributory factors that helped shape his extraordinary life, for better or worse.

He lifts the lid on his stormy relationship with his domineering father, former manager and sponsor, Halifax `hard man' Mal Carter.

He talks from the heart about the tragic death of his young brother and the suicide of both his mother and his elder brother, the controversial double British Speedway Champion and England No. 1 Kenny Carter.

What was Kenny, one of the sport's biggest draws, really like away from the track? Only his brother knows the truth behind speedway's biggest box office attraction - and it's all here in his astonishingly frank autobiography.

He tells, too, about the other tragedies that shook the Carter family, including the death of his own baby daughter, plus the bitter personal struggles that followed . . . losing his home, his business, bankruptcy and how he became an emotional wreck on the brink of a breakdown.

"I've been to hell and back," says Alan.
Now, as part of his recovery process, he has bared his soul by writing this amazing book.

Light in the Darkness is a compelling page-turner you won't be able to put down. Thanks to Alan Carter's searing honesty and Yorkshire wit, it will make you laugh and cry in equal measure.

A real page turner! 30 Jun 2011
Alan Carter had been brutally honest. I have laughed and I have cried and whilst it's a terrible cliché I truly could not put the book down.

The insight into his father Mal and brother Kenny is absolutely fascinating. They broke the mould with the Carter family, Alan's life story would also make a superb movie.

His own racing career I knew little about, but to be singled out by Kenny Roberts so early in his career is testament to his ability.

Even if I wasn't interested in speedway or motorcycle racing I would recommend the book: a real page turner and Alan's ability to tell it like it is makes it easily the best book I have read in many years...BRILLIANT!

Brill! 30 Jun 2011
Brilliant read, couldn't put it down. What a sense of humour Alan has. You would not believe the bad luck and tragedy this man and his notorious family has endured and yet he has survived to tell the tale exactly as it should be told. SUPERB A REAL PAGE TURNER.

His sense of humour and Yorkshire wit made me laugh out loud - this is a warning if you read on public transport! Best book I have read in ages, cannot recommend highly enough. Well done Alan for all.

I saw this book in the local bookshop at Brighouse near Halifax, and looked it up on Amazon to get it at a bargain price. Was it worth it! Being a sports fan with particular interest in motor bike racing, and a very enthusiastic speedway fan from the late 80s it immediately was a must read, particularly since the source of the book was from and about the local area. It was very interesting as places and people were familiar, and I just couldn't put it down.It was fascinating to discover links between people and places that I actually know. I knew basic bits about Kenny Carter but nothing about Alan, and the book was so easy to read it was an absolute pleasure! Very short chapters with brief information ,blunt and to the point, written by a true Yorkshireman. After reading it I passed it on to my family in the North East but I don't think the appeal was as great for them as they didn't have the same local knowledge as me, although they enjoy sport as I do.
