An interesting part of the development of many of the characters in the "audley" series of novels. They all reflect on the position of individuals in the contemporary scene as considered by an amateur historian writing a few years later. The author's interst in history is clear. This book's view of the middle east, framed by UK politics, has both relevance and entertainment value. Strongly recommended as quality thriller/detective fiction in an historical background. (other novels go back from current to "recent" and even napolionic history)

USED TO READ A LOT BY THIS GUY WHEN I WAS YOUNGER.IT DIDN'T DISAPPOINT.MORE INTRIGUE THAN ACTION,PEOPLE USING THEIR BRAINS MORE THAN ACTION THOUGH THERE IS A LITTLE OF THAT.HE HAS DONE BETTER THOUGH WELL WORTH LOOKING AT IF YOU LIKE SPY FICTION.

Anthony Price wrote a great deal of brilliant books set in his contempary time of the late 60's and 70's. They are excellent reads, albeit perhaps slightly dated, which actually makes them more interesting as they give the reader a look back onto an era that young people today struggle to comprehend. Those days were overshadowed by the cold war and the threat of communist invasion. As with all Price's books there is a military history enigma that becomes the twist of the story. Highly recommended.
