2.0 out of 5 stars A let down, 17 May 2009
By rm05 (England) - See all my reviews
I purchased one of these as the rugged design appealed. It was to be a replacement for my trusty 17 year old steel flask. I am disappointed because the Stanley flask has poor insulation compared to my old one.

As with all flasks, it must be pre-heated with boiling water as per the instructions prior to filling with boiling water. One would assume the liquid would then stay hot for at least the rest of the day, but unfortunately your drink goes from boiling to undrinkably luke-warm in about six hours or less. This is due to inadequate insulation -- the sides of the unit actually get too hot to touch comfortably, so it is clear a great deal of heat is lost through the sides, cooling the drink in no time at all. This is with ambient temperatures of 18-20C, so what it would be like in winter I dread to think!

I could also say the cup is tiny, but that is a minor point compared to my main criticism.

My old flask might have been a bit bulkier and lacked a handle, but it kept drinks hot all day and had a cup which was a practical size. This expensive Stanley flask offers about the same degree of insulation as the cheap steel flasks found in discount shops for about £3.

(Note that Stanley is a US company who coincidentally shares its name with the familiar UK-based tool manufacturer. They are not the same company).

4.0 out of 5 stars stanley flask, 21 Dec 2008
By K. O. Oparah (England) - See all my reviews

The flask is very distinctive, solid and well made; everything you would expect from such a company.

Having said this it would have been nice to see some element of yellow in the base to ensure the "black & yellow" colour continuity throughout something that makes a stanley product instantly recognisable.

The body and the handle of the flask are made from two different types of metal, personally i would have prefered the flask to be made entirely from the metal the handle is made of, because both the body and the cup pick up grease and fingerprints very easily.

Looking at the cup itself it would have been better firstly if the grip matched the handle grip and secondly been nearer the top. Thirdly the grooves are not deep enough, and seem to have been put in place for purely cosmetic purposes because in the absence of a handle it is more likely that the cup would be grasped closer to the top for better balance.

Looking at the stopper, the only times the flask should be opened are when the liquid is being poured in or when the flask is being cleaned out, therefore to get around this the inclusion of a foldable spout in the stopper would be ideal, it would help lock in the heat for that bit longer and give greater control over the contents when they are poured.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT A GOOD BUY, 26 Oct 2009
By T. Broadbent (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Bought this as a I was drawn towards the Stanley name and I thought that with the product having a 25 year guarantee then I would be buying a quality product. How wrong could I be? I have now had two of these - the first being returned as the outside area of the flask was getting quite hot. The second one was ok for the first couple of weeks after exchanging but now I have the same problem again. I am now going to return it but will now be looking to buy a completely different flask altogether. The drinks normally keeping warm (not hot) from about 8.00 in the morning up to lunchtime. I would have expected better from something which is not cheap product.
