5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers exactly what it says, 21 Dec 2003
The trouble with many live CDs is that they fail to capture the energy and rapport of a live performance. From the opening chords of the first track, "Why Henry Drinks", you are aware that this is not gonna be the case here and are transported to stage front in a hot, sweaty, seedy club and given the full DBTs live experience. When "Lookout Mountain" kicks in, you can just see Patterson Hood on stage, taking off his leather jacket (cos it's getting kinda warm), smiling at Mike Cooley and stomping his foot to the heavy riff. The best thing is, they maintain this momentum throughout the whole album. Each song is a peach and the banter between songs is, as always, entertaining and often poignant - the story of Patterson's mom finally finding happiness with a 350lb trucker before "18 wheels of love" brought a tear to my jaded eye. If you only buy one live album in your life, make it this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to get your ears whupped, 11 May 2003
By Andrew Platt (Leeds, North Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
If you like stripped down live southern rock with a soul then you'll love this live offering from the DBT's. Patterson Hoods simple intro 'y'awl we're the Drive By Truckers' takes us strtaight into 'Why Henry Drinks'-a tale of small town life and arguments fuelled by drunkeness. Reminsicent of 'Skynyrd, Neil Young and a roughed up Eagles the live atmosphere permeates all the songs and the rough edge of Hoods voice blends well with the fuzzy boogies of songs like 'Lookout Mountain' and 'Buttholeville'. The ode to an aids victim 'The living Bubba' has a genuine feel-enough to give you a catch in the throat-the tune iteself reminds of the Eagles classic Take it Easy.'Steve McQueen' is a true classic and would make the perfect soundtrack to a Dukes of Hazzard car chase-when they break into 'Skynyrds 'Gimme Three Steps' halfway through, it makes you want to get up and jump around the living room.
Having witnessed them live on their 2003 tour I can confirm this is the genuine article and takes me back to the gig in all its sweaty glory. A must for anyone who loves live southern rock with the added dimension of intelligent and gritty lyrics.

4.0 out of 5 stars A killer live album, we need a new one, 6 Jul 2007
By David J. Kelly (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The Drive-by Truckers are one of the best live bands in modern rock but their career had two distinct stages. Their first two albums contained some killer tracks but sometimes they verged on being novelty alt-country act. Then came the faux Stadium Rock of Southern Rock Opera and a whole new band was born.

This live set captures the DBTs in the transition and is none the worse for that. Great country punk songs like Buttholeville sit alongside the definitive version of Patterson Hood's wedding present to his mom and Chester in 18 Wheels of Love. Mike Cooley's Love Like This is just a perfect evocation of someone's disfunctional marriage. Steve McQueen is a classic punk song interspersed with two verses from Lynyrd Skynyrd's honky tonk boogie Gimme Three Steps. The Living Bubba stands as a typically humane and unsentimental Truckers' song about a cult Atlanta musician and his own personal fight against AIDS.

If you can get hold of this album for a reasonable price then do just that. As I said, the DBTs are one of the best live bands on the planet and in this snapshot recorded before they achieved "greatness" you can see just why. Whether there were 20 or 200 or 2000 people in the hall you get the same rock show.
