Book Description

Dec 2001
The famous compendium of fiqh and hadith of Malik ibn Anas, the founder of the Maliki school of law. Virtually every hadith in it was accepted by al-Bukhari. Ash-Shafi‘i said of it, "After the Book of Allah, there is no book on earth sounder than that of Malik." As well as giving legal judgements, it shows how Malik reached his rulings and the the nature of the ‘amal, or the practice of the people of Madina, in that context.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first book of fiqh/hadeeth ever written 11 April 2003
This book is a must for all followers of the Maliki school of thinking. It serves as an amazing refrence in to the inner workings of one the most amazing men who ever lived. The translation of the text is one great features of this work as well. Aisha Bewley (Some times given the title "At-Tarjumana" the 'translatress") is widely recognized as being the best arabic to english translator alive today. This work must surely count as her masterpiece. The logical division of this book is another plus point. The reason why i gave this book four stars rather than five (which many argue it may deserve) is because it does not include the original arabic text and any explanatory points are almost non existent. Despite these down points it is still a fantastic book

This is a great insight into one of the early hadith scholars.

It is written and sub sectioned like most hadith are and of course the
individual hadith are references. Remember these books are not easy
reads but they are so enriching and informative.

This is for mature adults and not a read for younger children.

Not all of Imam Malik's work has been translated into english yet, sadly,
but what is translated is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only they would republish the hardback 28 April 2007
By Gogol - Published on Amazon.com
Probably the best transltaion of the Muwatta you can find just such a pity that the original hardback has gone out of print and is now only available at silly money prices. The only negative I can find with this is that there is no corrosponding Arabic along side the English. Still, buy this and either ask an Arab friend to pick up the Arabic on his/her travels home or pick one up yourself on holiday (Youll find the Arabic will be about $10 at the most)

Well worth picking up for anyone with an interest in Maliki studies.

You may also wish to pick up the Muwatta of Imam Muhamad as well for the Hanafi view.
