Al Murray is someone I'd not taken much notice of on TV.
I knew him from his support of Harry Hill and caught the odd show on TV of his Pub Landlord routine.
However I must admit I can take him or leave him.

So I got the CD.
At an hour long it's not a marathon.
It's an entertaining listen and perfect for the car.

I must admit that I agree with other reviewers when they mention that the miss the visual aspect of Murray.
You really do his act really benefits from seeing him live or on DVD and the audio version losses a whole lot more than I had imagined.
This is an audio version of a DVD and not a specially recorded show for listening to.

I'd always thought of Al as being a static comedian. But on listening to this CD I realize I was wrong and Mr.Murray is a whole lot BETTER than I had imagined.

I really need to actually view his shows in great detail and suspect that I really had missed a really talented `comedian' in a fictional role.
This is an entertaining CD- good for a listen in the car and a real eye opener if you will pardon the expression with an aural performance.

I normally quite like Al Murray when I've seen him on TV so I thought I'd give this a try.

It's been recorded live at one of his gigs and is typical Al Murray - bit of swearing, a vague sense of very mild racism (or pride in being british) and some funny jokes with a lot of audience interaction.

Unfortunately some of the audience participation jokes are visual and that doesn't come over that well on an audio format. There are only one or two like this though and you can imagine what has been said.

Although he tries to come across as a man in the street, he is obviously well educated and one of the longer jokes he does begins by ranting about the government of the day, but then goes all the way back to each government, listing what was wrong with them, all the way back to before world war 2. Very impressive and very funny.

It's a shame that it runs to only just over an hour and it can sometimes be a bit hit and miss, but it's good value for the price.

This is the Brighton leg of Murray's 2012 "The Only Way is Epic" tour. As a recording of a live act there are visual gags and moments that you will miss. Namely, the introduction, presumably played on a big screen, where Murray casts around for the venue, to the "riddle" gag of packing a tent away at the end.
But there is more than enough to make this a brilliant standalone audio. The Pub Landlord is a brilliant piece of character comedy. His trademark is of course a strain of British identity that out Mails the Daily Mail, that, and incredible verbal set pieces that build in pitch and scope to epic rants that end with a punch line cried out as an appeal to sanity. An example of this on this cd is the discourse on entry to the EU, and an examination of Greek fiscal history, ending with the cry "why did nobody f@#%ing check?!" Then there's the countdown of all governments to Churchill, listing their huge non achievements and loudly declaiming each one as "the worst Government of all time."
The cd opens with a prolonged piece of audience engagement and improvisation that is brilliant and very funny. That established, Murray launches on his self-improvement seminar of what it means to be Epic. He tackles the EU, "kids today," political disenfranchisement, national identity, the debate on Scottish independence, and more. In this respect he differs from Peter Kay, who keeps his focus largely on the domestic, appealing to those everyday quirks of family life we all recognise. Murray is more about the corporate, national and societal. Yes he is a character who is a grotesque stereotype. But he does it so well as to imbue it with an incredible pathos, and like the best comedy, his outrageous gags throw up the occasional truth.
I listened to this on a run, and it had me guffawing in the street. It works, it is very funny, give it a go.

If there was a modern Alf Garnett - okay, for the younger members, Google him - Al comes very close in his observations of Life as we have come to know it and where it's all going wrong. I have to admit I am not a 'die hard' fan of his but a lot of his stuff hits home and rings as being very true - sadly.. I played this while driving in the car CD player and it certainly livens a trip up! - being recorded live in front of a real audience, as opposed to some that seem to be a bit doubtful with some comics, gives it a certain flavour but the content was quite enjoyable and at just over an hour long, does not grow into boredom. But as I started off by comparing (slightly!) him with Alf Garnett for the current times might give you an hint as to the real basis for his poke at the 'system' that has really let the real people of this country down, more so with his take on kids of today and is about 100% accurate in that direction and I would point out that some of the language is a bit strong, so you have been warned but as this seems to be the 'norm' these days for comics, real or otherwise (always bad news I think when you hear of somebody supposedly a comic and learning that they thought(?) they 'would give comedy a go'...), there should be no surprises there. As I say, I am not a fan as such but that is the reason for giving it four stars but none the worse for that, it's enjoyable and I may even go for the DVD which I understand is on release once the price drops on Amazon in time!
