Book Description

5 Jun 2014
San Francisco, 1969. The summer of drugs, music and a new age dawning. A young, earnest Ajax Penumbra has been given his first assignment as a Junior Acquisitions Officer - to find the single surviving copy of the Techne Tycheon, a mysterious volume that has brought and lost great fortune for anyone who has owned it. After a few weeks of rigorous hunting, Penumbra feels no closer to his goal than when he started. But late one night, after another day of dispiriting dead ends, he stumbles upon a 24-hour bookstore and the possibilities before him expand exponentially. With the help of his friend's homemade computer, an ancient map, a sunken ship and the vast shelves of the 24-hour bookstore, Ajax Penumbra might just find what he's seeking...

4.0 out of 5 stars One for the completist 11 July 2014
By D. Harris TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This slim volume is really, I think, a little treat for those who read and loved Sloan's "Mr Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore". Basically it tells us how Penumbra found the Bookstore when he came to San Francisco (...cue That Song...) in 1969.

It seems that there other tenacious literary collectors, besides the Unbroken Spine, and Penumbra used to work for one of them. His quest for a particular book leads him to the Store where his life will change...

Like the main volume, this book touches on the (much more nascent) digital economy, with Penumbra seeking help from a colleague who's in at the start with the Internet, on the value of books, on encryption. But it's really much briefer, barely a morsel of the longer book. One to read if you'd like to know more about Mr P and his friends (and later enemies), but that's about all, really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming prequel to "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore" 14 July 2014
By ReaderGirl - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is a delightful little short tale, a prequel to "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore". It tells of Mr. Penumbra's younger days at a small college, where he majors in a not-really-listed major pertaining to antiquarian book oddities.... I enjoyed getting another little taste of this charming world!

There's nothing wrong with this tale -- although I wouldn't have minded it being a bit longer. But sometimes less is more.

Delightful novella describing how Mr. Penumbra came to own the 24-hour bookstore. Charming, one-sitting read.
