Got this from another retailer. My 10 year old put this together (whilst I watched) which the fun bit. Once complete there is no real play - it goes through the stages and makes lots of noice.

The issue we had is, it all depends on a few rubberbands with teeth - for no reason other than shody materials the first one snapped after abouth 15 minutes play. The second kit was again built - this time checked even more carefully - same again, snapped belt - will make lots of noise but not all the pistons fire.

Seem a product of marketing over design - please try hard next time airfix.

This is a cute kit, and reasonably well made. Assembling it is quite easy-- take care to drive the screws straight and not overtighten. The finished model is far more sturdy than you might expect from the box. My 2 year old son has played with his older brother's model daily for the past month, and it has suffered no harm.

That said, it's hard to think of this as an educational kit. The valves move, but don't open or close anything. The valve timing is senseless; it comes nowhere close to approximating the correct pattern of a 4-cylinder engine. Were the cam corrected, the spark firing pattern is not syncronized to the valves as it resets every time the engine starts regardless of cam position. The fan is set up to push air rather than pull, and so on. It is an engine as designed by someone who knows rather little about engines.

If you think of this model as an attractive piece of kinemetic sculpture shaped like an engine, it is satisfying. If you're an engineer or buying this as a teaching tool for your kids--- the failure of this model to get essential basics of operation correct will drive you batty.

Whilst this is a very good airfix model kit there are some issues I had with this kit.

First of all the standard of some of the screws used with this model are of a very poor quality. As many of the sections of the model which require screws are not internally threaded, some degree of force is needed to fully thread the screw. This can cause the head of the screw to become damaged which prevents further usage. However, that being said there are a couple of spare screws in the kit so if any become damage there are replacements available.

Secondly, the kit is also slightly misleading. The box states that it is a kit of over 100 parts, however, around 50 of these parts are screws which had made the kit sound more complex than it actually was.

Finally, the sound effects of the model are in my opinion unnecessary and detract from the completed model. Also they are far louder than is needed for the model and are also of a rather poor quality.

However, despite the three complaints i have had about this Airfix model kit, there are a number positves. The kit is complicated enough for it to be interesting for the older Airfix fans but also still accessible and completable for a person of a youunger age. The instructions are also well laid out and very easy to follow and the kit also includes everything needed to complete it (with the exception of a pair of clippers and maybe a file). The kit also has a very good educational value as it clearly shows the workings of the internal combustion engine due to the see-through plastic nature of the outer shell and the back half of the instruction booklet also explains how a real engine works.

Overall, this is a fantastic kit from Airfix and it is refreshing to be able to complete a model kit without needing a variety of paints to do so. Therefore, despite my stated complaints about this kit i would still recomend this to anyone who is interested in engines, Airfix or who is just looking a for a hobby to pass a few hours on.
