Could be better 5 Jan 2011

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Have just completed this kit over the last three days with my eight year old. It was bought as a present by someone else as my son loves anything to do with aeroplanes. The box says the kit is suitable for a 10+ year old but there is no way a 10 year old would be able to complete this on their own. The instructions for the wiring are very confusing as they are in black & white and so relies on the wire colours to be written on the wiring diagram. This is very confusing as the real colours of the wires from the switch are different.
That aside, the kit builds easily enough, my son assembling all the fan blades on his own.
The power to drive the fan blades is by a small electric fan which blows air onto the blade. The engine needs to be given some assistance to get going on full power so when throttled back the jet stops. The fan needs to be more powerful.
We did have a little fun building it together and there is an educational value to seeing how the engine works in theory.
The main problem is the poor implementation. My son has started it once and is now not interested anymore. I'm sure there are far more interesting online demos or books of how jet engines work. They are also much cheaper.
Another alternative would be to purchase a ticket to an airshow and see for real what a jet engine can really do and what it sounds like.

I am a qualified Radio Officer, with many years experience. I purchased the Airfix Jet Engine 20005, and was eager to get started. Pow, I am unable to wire the model up, because the wiring diagram, and instructions arew woefully inadequate. The instructions, are in black and white. The diagram shows two reds from the switch, whereas in reality, there is black and red! Ok I could guess, but not all the time.

The Airfix customer is not good, I have left a telephone message with them, and also sent an email, no answer, I am stuck.

The kit is well produced and easy to assemble until we came to the valve assembly. The diagram does not tally with the kit and completely negates the objective of the kit:- "to instruct on an engine's working principles."

It is still a worthwhile project but I have seen other reviews that complain of the same error and it should be sorted out by the manufacturers ASP.
