After buying the combustion engine kit a year back and my son thoroughly enjoying it he continually asked for this kit but it was out of stock at the manufacturer. Finally it was back in stock in time for Xmas, however, I wish it hadn't been for two key reasons:

Firstly the robustness of the item - the wires are so thin and so loosely connected that if you move some of them to get them in the right place they snap off (and beleive me we were gentle!) and one of the wires was too short to you couldn't put the housing together without pulling the solder off. Luckily my partner is an electrician and was able to resolder and in the case of the short wire replace it.

Secondly, the instructions are very poor - the combustion engine set gives clear guidance even a young kid could follow (using the correct technical terminology and the simple explanation side by side) but this guide was totally inadequate and the only saving grace was the pictures.

The end product is fun - but you need a soldering iron on hand to build it!

This is a great little model, all parts come in seperate bags, and once you get the model running, its a lovely little piece from Airfix.
However, there is a small bit of wiring needed, but no special tools required other than a hair dryer, be very careful when assembling the electrics, as the soldered joints are flimsey, and i ended up re-soldering two joints.
The engine goes together well, but take some time adjusting the air blower nozzle to give you the correct angle for the air to hit the inlet fan, this is easily done.
To get the engine turning, you may have to lightly sand the inlet fan edges, to prevent it catching on the engine casing.

Overall a lovely kit, if i were airfix i would add push fit connectors, for a little extra cost, and make the wiring diagram more clear.

I agree with all the other reviews. The red wire on the switch came off after a few minutes of connecting to the battery box. I tinned and soldered all the other wires. I think Airfix should keep to products with out electrics. However once built its is a excellent kit.
