Product Description

Product Description

The Stirling was the first of the RAF's four engined bombers to go into service during the Second World War. Its function was that of bomber, mine-layer, supply dropping, transport and glider tug. It could absorb a terrific amount of damage and was used consistently by Bomber Command well into 1944. Always remembered as the first of the four-engined bombers to join the RAF, the Stirling suffered from several design limitations which severely affected its performance and load-carrying capability. As a consequence, its service with Bomber Command was marred by heavy losses when used on operations alongside the higher-flying Halifaxes and Lancasters. By mid-1944 the Stirlings had found a new lease of life as troop-carriers or glider-tugs, being used as such during the D-Day landings. The final Bomber Command operation was flown by No 149 Squadron against Le Havre on 8 September 1944. Two Victoria Crosses were won by crew members of the Stirling.

As with a lot of the older Airfix kits the parts at times don't fit together too well however with a bit of graft (and some sandpaper!) it all slots together nicely in the end. Great kit for someone who wants a 4-engined British bomber but doesn't want to fork out loads for the Lancaster. The service from Amazon was, as always, perfect and it arrived on time with no problems.

I looked forward to building this as I had a family connection a relative having died in one during the war. I have to say that the finished model looks very good and its not nearly as ugly as the illustration on the box would have you believe. The skill level required is rather higher I think than they say.The Short Stirling had quite a complicated landing gear(one of the reasons for its failure as a bomber)and this is reasonably difficult to build with the undercarriage down but now its down it looks good. About 2300 were built and sadly not single example exists today. You need a great deal of patience to build one and to think ahead as some parts need to be painted before assembly-not always clear from the instructions. Its also quite large even at 1:72 and you may need to check this. Paints and glue cost extra.

Item good but Amazon's packaging left much to be desired - shipped in plastic envelope which is quite inappropriate for a model kit of this nature. Box crushed which spoils it as a present but contents OK and therefore not worth the hassle of returning. Suggest Amazon give more thought to packing model kits.

This is an impressive and detailed model. My son has really enjoyed putting it together and adding it to his extensive Airfix collection.
