Product Description

Product Description

The suprb amphibious "Cat" entered service in 1939 and was immediately successful in its various roles. The type from 209 squadron spotted the Bismarck during the famous action and 196 U-Boats were destroyed during WWII. The US Navy flew "Black Cats" to harass Japanese naval vessels at night in the Denmark Strait in 1941. Weaknesses such as a slow flying speed, lack of crew armour and no self-sealing tanks, led to more suitable roles for the "Cat". Coinciding with the development of effective radar, and Japanese reliance on night transport led to the development of the "Black Cat Squadrons." These crews performed nighttime search and attack missions in their black-painted PBYs. The tactics were spectacularly successful and seriously disrupted the flow of supplies and personnel to Japanese island bases.

The PBY5a Catalina was an amphibian aircraft (meaning it could operate from land or water) designed by the American company Consolidated Aircraft in the 1930's. It was operated by the US Navy and RAF Coastal Command during WW2 in a wide variety of roles, including maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare and maritime search and rescue. It is a testament to the longevity of the design and construction of the plane that it still operates, in some numbers, in a serious role today (forest fire fighting).

This is a "classic" kit. You can read that word however you like, but in plastic model kit manufacturer speak, that means that it is an *old* kit. I don't know quite how old, but I suspect that it probably pre-dates me by a few years. What that means in practise is that you get a fairly crude molding - raised panel lines (instead of recessed), chunky, clunky parts, little or no internal detail and more flash than Jumping Jack. What's worse is that Airfix decided to reprsent the skin riveting by covering the damn thing with several zillion raised pimples that scale up to something approaching a Clydeside dockyard bolt-head - totally inappropriate for an aircraft.

All of that is well and good: A decent modeller (better than I, for instance) would not think twice about rectifying these faults with some scratch-building magic. Apart from sanding off the rivets, I accepted these various shortcomings and simply treated the kit as a bit of practise. Rather expensive practise, I'm afraid - I suspect that you can get a far better kit of the aircraft for comparable price (Academy 1/72 Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina Black Cat # 2137 for instance).

I ordered this model because it is one of the greatest aircraft that the USA ever produced - amongst other battles one must not forget it's role in the sinking of the Bismarck and the Battle of Midway. The kit itself seems easy to put together and I'm sure it will complement my other flying boats and float planes. The only minor quibble was the fact I had to download the paint scheme for the RAF Coastal Command version from the Airfix website.
