A good show!!! 30 Dec 2010

A very easy kit for an experienced modeller yet also satisfying.

The model is well rendered and goes together easily.

A much better kit than the old Airfix kit for this version of the Spitfire and also a better kit to display the colours of the RAF's top scoring pilot "Jonnie Johnson".

For 1/72 the kit is detailed enough. A more detailed cockpit is a waste since it cannot be seen especially if the pilot is in place.

Average and easy 7 Dec 2010

This is one of the New Tool kits from Airfix, and a joy in the sense that this honourable old brand is making its way back on the market of modern kits. Unfortunately, for Airfix, the modern plastic kit is of much higher quality than it was in their heyday.

The kit has recessed panel lines and has reasonably well surface details, the fit is good and the decals are very good. On the downside it has a cockpit which looks like it is from a kit from the 50's, and on the whole the kit is a bit simple.

For the modeller with a bit of experience I would rather recommend the Italeri Spitfire Mk.IX. It is a bit more complex, have more parts and the fit is not as good, but it is in about the same price range, and offers much better cockpit detail as well as more crispier surface details.

Good fun to build though, the Airfix kit, and well suited for the beginners.

While the Spitfire is one of the most famous aircraft in history, certain Marks have been under-represented in the plastic model market. Most 1/72 kits are of the Mark I or V.

This is a new release, not to be confused with the truly ancient and awful Airfix Mark IX which is usually sold as 'Johnnie Johnson's' JE-J. This is a new mould, looks accurate and is reasonably priced. However, there's not much in the way of interior, which is strange given the excellent cockpit in the new Airfix Mark XIX. Two nice decal options and colour schemes are provided.

I enjoyed building this and it's better value than the Hasegawa kits, which are getting pretty scarce anyway.

Well done Airfix
