Product Description

Product Description

Introduced to German tank units in 1942, the Tiger I was the most powerful tank at that time and remained so for almost three years. The Tiger I was produced from late 1942 as an answer to the unexpectedly formidable Soviet armour encountered in the initial months of Operation Barbarossa (the invasion of Russia).. The Tiger I design gave the Wehrmacht its first tank mounting the 88 mm gun. During the course of the war, the Tiger I saw combat on all German battlefronts. It was usually deployed in independent tank battalions, which proved to be quite formidable. Over-engineered, un-reliable, expensive and time-consuming to produce, only 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944, which was simply not enough compared to the massive production of the Soviet's T-34 and the U.S.'s Sherman.

This is a plastic model kit which requires construction and painting (paints, glue and brushes will have to be purchased separately).

Achtung, Airfix! 4 Oct 2010
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
Not one of Airfix's best kits which is a shame since the Tiger tank is a true icon of WW2.

Fit of the parts isn't too bad for a 30+ year old kit but accuracy is a bit ropey - no exhaust covers, no turret bin, no mud guards, poor detail on the MGs and tracks and the cupola looks a bit flat. Nor is there any anything in the way of hull detail - tools or tow cables.

That's not to say this kit can't be made to look good with a bit of work but there are better Tiger kits out there if you just want to build one out of the box.

Bought this as a first stab at model building. Not too bad to put together but some of the parts are very fiddly and fragile so be careful. Dont force anything and most importantly, take your time. This model cant be built in ten mins. Best to give it a week to allow for cement to dry etc. I built the hull and turret seperately as it was easier to paint. I have posted pics of my examples, but I do think I'll move onto airbrushing next. The tracks are not the best to fit. I had to use hot pliers to fuse the rubber together. One of the tracks I applied too much heat so used a staple instead to hold the track together. Did the job. Anyway, just bought another model from Revell and straight away you can notice the difference in quality. The plastic is more solid.

In conclusion, not a bad model to start off with when beginning the hobby of model building. But once youve done a couple you will want something more challenging and with a bit more quality.
