Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
My first thought when opening the box was how few parts there were. Airfix kits, even at this scale, are usually quite detailed, but this was kind of thing I would expect to get free in a box of cornflakes.

When it came to assembling the kit I became aware of the poor quality of the moulding - It needed a lot of filing and putty to get rid of the flash and moulding errors. The pilot figures are the standard Airfix WWII figures, and as such are far too big for the cockpit space; I would recommend perhaps cutting them off at the waist to make them fit. Getting the top wing on was not easy - not unusual in a biplane, but the poor moulding made this so much more difficult. The painting required three coats of Humbrol acrylic gloss yellow to get decent cover, then finally came the water-slide transfers (or decals, as they appear to be called these days). I have never, ever, come across horrors like these before; they just cracked and fell apart as I tried to position them.

So this is one that only an experienced modeller with a sense of humour and vast patience should attempt. There are lots of other excellent kits in the same price range - for example you could try the Airfix Hawker Hurricane MkIIC for a great kit that you can build into a model to be proud of. But avoid the Tiger Moth unless you're a masochist.

This is not one of Airfix's better kits. The main problems are:

* Poor quality mouldings
* Oversized figures supplied are difficult to fit in cockpits
* Wing mouldings distorted
* Lots of "flash" on parts
* Strut mouldings very poor
* Fuselage fit very poor

I would not recommend this kit for anyone really. This version was much poorer quality than the last one I remember building in the 1980s.

I had great difficulty in getting the fuselage to fit cleanly which is unusual for Airfix and the upper wing was also extremely difficult to assemble cleanly. The finished model was ok but too needed far more fiddling and tweaking than this simple kit should have done.

Airfix Tiger Moth 22 Aug 2010
By JML
Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
The Airfix Tiger Moth is quite a challenging little kit, although there are very few parts, which gives the illusion of it being quite simple, it is not. This is mostly due to the amount of excess plastic, which requires the use of a blade to remove it, in order to get the parts to fit together.I bought this kit for my nine year old and he could not get the Pilot figures to fit in the plane, despite correctly following the instructions.This was easily fixed, by slicing-off the outer edges of the Pilots' arms in order to make them fit (fettling).To be fair, most or all model kits of any make, require the use of a blade to remove excess plastic (some more than others) just be prepared to use common sense where necessary,and help out where the use of a blade is required !
