The latest volume in the Airfields and Airmen series covers the Arras area. It includes a visit to the grave of Albert Ball VC and the graves of Waterfall and Bayly, the first British fliers killed in action. There is a visit to the aerodrome from which Alan McLeod took off from to earn his VC and to the grave of Viscount Glentworth, killed while flying with 32 Squadron. The German side is well covered with visits to their cemeteries and aerodromes. This well researched book relives the deadly thrills of war in the air over the battlefields of the Western Front.

In a nut shell: very interesting descriptions of WW1 airfields and the airmen who were based there. Included are modern road directions to find these sites along with modern and contemporary photos of the airfields themselves, enabling the reader to see how things have changed over the years.
A highly recommended series, with careful research by the author.
Only improvement would be inclusion of some colour to modern pictures, -but this would have obviously added to the publishing cost.
O'Connor treads the delicate balance of preparing a book to act as a guide to the battlefields and cemeteries whilst still remaining something readable in its own right. He succeeds, with the only drawback being that the books in this series are quite short.

Michael O'Connor capably executes an examination and guide to essential aviation history "flashpoints" in this Battleground series dedicated to the aerial events pertinent to the great battle of Arras and it's vicinity. One of the highlights here is the great ace Albert Ball's final dogfight and grave site! These books are the next best thing to actually going to France and Mike O'Connor provides information, maps, and photos to elucidate this fascinating facet of WWI aviation history! I am a WWI aviation enthusiast and I have the complete collection of Mike O'Connor books. They are a very valuable part of my WWI library and I reference them often in my studies and reread them from cover to cover!
