Product Description

Product Description

This book is part of the Images of England series, which uses old photographs and archived images to show the history of various local areas in England, through their streets, shops, pubs, and people. In this book, the author presents a unique record of this navigation's history, in operation from 1704 to the present day. By the early 19th century, the Leeds to Goole navigation was linking up with other new waterways in the area, and carried millions of tons of cargo annually, making it one of the most important waterways in the land.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pictures with informative captions, 22 Nov 2010
By
Bob Evens (Worksop, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Aire and Calder Navigation (Archive Photographs: Images of England) (Paperback)
This is a delightful collection of pictures. Generally there are two to a page, and each has an informative caption. Most are photographs, with a few diagrams and maps. Rather than a chronological structure, they are grouped into eight sections, covering A historical review, People, Down the navigation, Goole and the tideway, Tom puddings, Boat-building and repairs, Traffic, and The navigation today. Reproduction of the prints is generally crisp, and even the poorer-quality early prints are sufficiently light to see the detail.
