I recently bought a Mac Pro 8 Core computer and to my amazement discovered that wireless was an optional extra that Apple would want me to have installed using the Airport Extreme card by an Apple technician, which is not only expensive but also a pain in the neck, so I looked for an alternative like this.

At first I tried a product from Edimax for the same sort of money that claimed to work with Mac but it was a joke. The driver was done with old PPC coding and the 10.6 version was a lost cause, while the 10.5 version was glitchy and unreliable, so that brought me to Amazon where I read the other reviews here and decided to give this Airlink a go.

The manual for the Mac on the CD is a bit out of date and doesn't accurately reflect the current configuration for system preferences so I did have a couple minutes of head scratching but in actual fact there was nothing really do in the networking tab under snow leopard. In practice I just had to start the Airlink driver software to input my network SSID and add the password, then it all instantly worked with no fuss or bother and so far there has been no loss of connection or slow speeds.

The router is downstairs on the other side of the house and yet I have a signal strength that never dips below 99% and unlike the Edimax that had an inconveniently large antenna the Airlink is no bigger than a thumbnail. The delivery took 7 days, which was a bit slower than I would have expected for a product that was in stock but all in all I'm very happy.

I have just updated to 10.7 and it works but the results so far are patchy after a day or so of testing. It no longer works when attached to my keyboard like before and has to be connected to the main computer. For the most part it's OK but sometimes it will just stop and the only way to fix it is through a computer restart. I am hoping there will be a driver update soon.

it just works 27 May 2010
By Jay Arr
Bought this late yesterday arrived before 10 this morning
It's a very neat, tiny, dongle.
Got the latest OSX 10.6 driver for my Macbook off the Airlink website
ignored the instructions manual,
plugged it in,
loaded the driver,
rebooted,
connected to one of my networks with the AirLink Utility
(which reports my link speeds as TX 150MBS & RX 300MBS
set my router/modem (a Linksys WAG 325N) wireless password
and (inside 2 minutes)
it
JUST WORKS.
And it appears to be much faster than my failed AirPort card ...
but the range seems a bit limited but that could be my geography
& it doesn't detect my neighbour's network, the AirPort did.

Summary:
If you need one
get this one.

Purchased the Airlink USB adapter after the WiFi in my Macbook G4 failed. The software installation is easy and works fine on a Mac G4 (OS10.4.11), only quirk is that it doesn't remember the key/password for my wireless, I need to type this in every time I want to connect. The documentation is poor, no instructions how to optimist for your system. The data transmission is great when I sit next to my router, but deteriorates quickly when moving elsewhere. Just around the corner, even with the doors open the connection is patchy/slow/broken, although my cheap Toshiba netbook has no problem. So bottom line, don't spend your money on this.
I also tried the LM technologies 150mps adapter: the software interface is exactly the same and the adapter gives the same poor results as the Airlink.

Small size and great performance
This is one of the smallest wireless adapters on the market. Despite its small size it provides excellent connectivity and very fast. great product.

Works well, but not on channel 12 or 13
The adapter works well and reception is good, but I had to change my router from channel 13 to 11 as the supplied software only allows the American authorised channels up to 11.

Excellent little gadget
Does exactly what it is supposed to do. Smaller than the other options so it doesn't get in the way. Top rated.

airlink 101
Bought this for my Macbook running Snow Leopard after the built-in wireless stopped working. Easy to install and works well. Cheaper than getting the computer fixed by Apple.
