Heroic Hollywood Blockbuster-room to improve on Blu-Ray,
This review is from: Air Force One [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This is a review for the Blu-Ray. It was viewed on a US Panasonic Plasma (42"), and BD35 player. The PQ is a 3.5/5, and AQ 5/5. The colors and blacks are rich, but there is significant grain in the picture. I am a e fan of this film, and have seen it on VHS and DVD. This is a marked improvement over those 2 formats, and worth a look for fans of this film.
As one reviewer remarked, the film surely is a tad unrealistic. But as far as I can tell, so are most Hollywood blockbusters, which serve up escapism, and embellished storylines. For a "realistic" film, perhaps it's best to investigate films based on "true" stories and biographies. Though I am a citizen of the United States, there is no need to have a flag erected in my front yard, as this reviewer claims, to be excited about the film. At its core, the film is simply about the choice to stand one's ground on principle. It's action packed, emotional, and contains all of the elements of an "edge of your seat" action film. It's refreshing to see characters, regardless from what country they are to hail, on screen, that do not compromise their principles. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and recommend it for any fan of the film, or genre. The score, and performances are on point. Though I am not a huge Harrison Ford Fan, his performance here is, in my opinion, the best I've seen. Glen Close plays an incredibly strong and convincing part, and the rest of the cast is fantastic as well. Though the Blu-Ray requires some improvement, it's the cleanest picture you'll see. Definitely worth a look!

Stars and Stripes forever,
By John Smith (Powys U.K) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Air Force One [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
I have read some of the reviews that criticise this film for its jingoistic and simplistic world view but that is really to miss the point. This is an Action Adventure movie ,in the mould of the Die Hard movies and,on that level, this is a superb film.Yes the Americans are the good guys and the Russians are the bad guys but the scene where a fighter pilot sacrifices himself to save the President is brilliant and I think probably does reflect America`s attitude to the office of President. The President is America.
And isn`t it fun, just for once, in these cynical times, to enjoy a little of the American pride in their country. If nothing else enjoy the stirring music provided by Jerry Goldsmith!

Great film - but the DVD structure is terrible.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Air Force One [DVD] [1997] (DVD)
THE FILM: The film's main strongpoint is its action. The storyline isn't too dissimilar to the Wesley Snipes film "Passenger 57" but still brings new ideas to the table. Playing the President of the United States is Harrison Ford,a better choice compared to ID4's Bill Pullman, who not only looks the part, but has skills in both drama (Regarding Henry) and action (Indiana Jones) to play such a role effectively. Highly entertaining, action packed with a gripping story.THE DVD: Whoever had the idea to split the film in two and place each half on separate sides of a double-sided DVD (without any special features) is an idiot. The film would easily have fit on one side of a DVD (Lethal Weapon 4 did and that's of the same running time) and some special features wouldn't have gone amiss - even if it was little more than cast/crew profiles. Obviously, can't fault the picture and sound quality. On the whole - it's a great film, but the near-cinema experience is tarnished by the fact that you have to turn the DVD over half-way through. I thought they eliminated that when they phased out vinyl?
