If you can manage to suspend your disbelief for the duration, you won't be disappointed with Air Force One. Harrison Ford plays a US president who single-handedly employs his rigid anti-terrorism policy when a band of Russian thugs hatch a mid-flight takeover of Air Force One. Gary Oldman, who chews the scenery as the lead terrorist, will shoot a hostage at the slightest provocation. Glenn Close plays the sternly pragmatic vice president who negotiates with Oldman from her Washington seat of power. If you can believe that the aircraft's pressurised cabin can sustain hundreds of rounds of machine-gun fire, you'll buy anything in this entertaining potboiler, especially thanks to Ford's stalwart heroics and some nifty special effects. Director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) keeps the action moving so fast you won't be sweating the details.--Jeff Shannon,

3.0 out of 5 stars God Bless The Good Ole USA !!! 26 Jan 2014
By David H J Ashdown TOP 500 REVIEWER
Of course The USA is always right and all other governments , regimes or different cultures from theirs are wrong , or am I missing the point of this jingoistic offering where Russians hijack Airforce 1 with the aim of having their leader released after he was kidnapped by American forces no doubt for entirely altruistic reasons. The film was good entertainment but to say it was biased was like saying " Is The Pope Catholic ". It was more like a Star Wars movie towards the end but it was good entertainment if you like comedies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Force To Be Reckoned With!! 9 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This film may suffer from a slightly unbelievable story line but when you have Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Glenn Close delivering performances as strong as these, you're going to get your moneys worth.
The picture quality is very good with a nice anamorphic transfer and very few marks on the print.
The sound is Dolby 5.1 as are most DVD's released these days, but with this film containing great action scenes and explosions, the sound quality really stands out.
The extras include a 6-minute featurette, which is more of an extended trailer, a fantastic Director's Commentary which is different to other Commentaries because the director is being asked questions by an interviewer while they watch it. You get the trailer for this film as well as 'Pearl Harbour' and last of all you get a bizarre subtitles extra, this is basically watching the film with subtitles but instead of them being normal subtitles, they are actually bits of information regarding the movie, this is a weird but wonderful extra, and is well worth watching as there's loads of interesting stuff.

This is a review for the Blu-Ray. It was viewed on a US Panasonic Plasma (42"), and BD35 player. The PQ is a 3.5/5, and AQ 5/5. The colors and blacks are rich, but there is significant grain in the picture. I am a e fan of this film, and have seen it on VHS and DVD. This is a marked improvement over those 2 formats, and worth a look for fans of this film.

As one reviewer remarked, the film surely is a tad unrealistic. But as far as I can tell, so are most Hollywood blockbusters, which serve up escapism, and embellished storylines. For a "realistic" film, perhaps it's best to investigate films based on "true" stories and biographies.

Though I am a citizen of the United States, there is no need to have a flag erected in my front yard, as this reviewer claims, to be excited about the film. At its core, the film is simply about the choice to stand one's ground on principle. It's action packed, emotional, and contains all of the elements of an "edge of your seat" action film. It's refreshing to see characters, regardless from what country they are to hail, on screen, that do not compromise their principles.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and recommend it for any fan of the film, or genre. The score, and performances are on point. Though I am not a huge Harrison Ford Fan, his performance here is, in my opinion, the best I've seen. Glen Close plays an incredibly strong and convincing part, and the rest of the cast is fantastic as well. Though the Blu-Ray requires some improvement, it's the cleanest picture you'll see. Definitely worth a look!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stars and Stripes forever 12 Sep 2007
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I have read some of the reviews that criticise this film for its jingoistic and simplistic world view but that is really to miss the point. This is an Action Adventure movie ,in the mould of the Die Hard movies and,on that level, this is a superb film.Yes the Americans are the good guys and the Russians are the bad guys but the scene where a fighter pilot sacrifices himself to save the President is brilliant and I think probably does reflect America`s attitude to the office of President. The President is America.
And isn`t it fun, just for once, in these cynical times, to enjoy a little of the American pride in their country.
If nothing else enjoy the stirring music provided by Jerry Goldsmith!

4.0 out of 5 stars Air Force One hits hard on Blu-ray 16 Sep 2009
By Dr T
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Firstly, just to saw I certainly don't consider this to be the best film ever made, so my starting point is a 4 star rating. The actual Blu-ray transfer is pretty good. The picture is not super sharp but seems accurate to the source material and is consistent throughout. The soundtrack, an uncompressed PCM, hits very, very hard (at least on my system) during the action motions. The opening sequence has all hell breaking loose, with gunfire, helicopters etc. Later scenes with the escort planes and so on actually feel like you have a jet engine by your ear. It's very impressive, although I did find myself turning the volume up for the dialogue moments and down for the action, just out of consideration for my neighbours! Overall, recommended if you like this kind of film. Some may find it too cheesy. For me, it's a nice, good quality production to just sit back and enjoy without thinking too hard.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great film - but the DVD structure is terrible. 21 July 2000
By A Customer
THE FILM: The film's main strongpoint is its action. The storyline isn't too dissimilar to the Wesley Snipes film "Passenger 57" but still brings new ideas to the table. Playing the President of the United States is Harrison Ford,a better choice compared to ID4's Bill Pullman, who not only looks the part, but has skills in both drama (Regarding Henry) and action (Indiana Jones) to play such a role effectively. Highly entertaining, action packed with a gripping story.
THE DVD: Whoever had the idea to split the film in two and place each half on separate sides of a double-sided DVD (without any special features) is an idiot. The film would easily have fit on one side of a DVD (Lethal Weapon 4 did and that's of the same running time) and some special features wouldn't have gone amiss - even if it was little more than cast/crew profiles. Obviously, can't fault the picture and sound quality.
On the whole - it's a great film, but the near-cinema experience is tarnished by the fact that you have to turn the DVD over half-way through. I thought they eliminated that when they phased out vinyl?
