5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic fantasy novel 4 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've been a huge fan of fantasy novels for as long as I can remember, and Laura Power's first novel, Air-Born, is expressive and beautifully descriptive. Fairies, goblins, centaurs and gargoyles, there are so many different kinds of creature that are in this novel and it is a delight to get to know these interesting characters. The novel is filled with adventure, and I particularly loved the hints at the history of this Realm. My only (exceptionally minor!) quibble is that I would have liked there to be a map included of the world. Maps are always an interesting part of a fantasy novel, enabling the reader to connect different towns and areas in relation to each other.
All in all a great read, and I can't wait for book number two!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Start To An Epic Story 29 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This book asks the question: Can two outcasts save the Realm?

Banished in disgrace after losing a priceless heirloom days before her coming-of-age ceremony, Amber’s search takes her far beyond the borders of Fairymead and sends her stumbling into a Goblin plot of sorcery and savagery. Giving up her ability to fly in order to rescue Racxen, a swamp-dwelling, claw-handed young Arraheng man who is battling demons of his own, Amber joins forces with him to both thwart a monster long consigned to legend and carve her identity anew.

This adventure is a perfect summertime read for young adults and pre-teens alike. Characters are well actualized, with vivid details that pop off the screen. The world building is marvelous, if not a little too overdone at times, and brings the setting to life off the pages. The story moves without a hitch and the continuity of the prose if strong and easily enjoyable. The book ends with an opening that should lead us perfectly into the next installment, Earth-Bound. Can’t wait! 3.5/5 stars
