5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Very very impressed!, 1 May 2008
I have an A3 Wacom Intuos tablet at home, which is great, but I spend a lot of time on the road living in Hotel rooms and so I wanted a travel tablet. Originally I bought a Wacom Volito2, but I hated it, even at it's softest setting you have to press really hard and so natural sketching isn't possible, also the drawing area is about the size of a credit card. I saw this Aiptek Slim 600u on Amazon and the reviews were good so I bought one and I am very impressed.

First impression when I got out of the box (free delivery - only took 2 days) was how slim the slim tablet is - it is only 5mm thick apart from a bar at the top that is about 10mm. Then I noticed that almost the entire tablet is drawing area (whereas the wacom had about 2-3 inches of non-drawing area all around).

I plugged it in and it was detected immediately and then I put a battery in the pen and started to draw. What a fantastic tablet! The sensitivity is as good (or maybe better) than my intuos (which is admittedly a first generation model) and there was no detectable lag even when moving the pen very fast. it feels very natural. The pen tip is sprung and so squashes in when you press harder, I like this effect. Wacom nibs do not move discernibly no matter how hard you press so if you are used to that you might find this takes a little getting used to.

Unknown element: I do not know how long the battery in the pen will last yet.

Summary: The Volito 2 costs 5 pounds less than the Aiptek Slim, but for my money there is no comparison between them. I would say that the Aiptek is at least as good as my Intuos (which would still cost 4 times as much if I got one on ebay), it is light, portable and a joy to use and for the money is an absolute bargain! If you want a light, portable tablet with a large drawing area and great performance look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic product - forget wacom! , 19 Feb 2008
I never thought I would migrate from a wacom tablet. But with now working between Portugal and UK, I needed two. The wacom tablet is in Portugal and needed another for UK. Was very sceptical about the low price of aiptek vs the wacom and highly sceptical that the Aiptek would be as 'professional' as the Wacom of which I have had numerous over the years. I am glad my wallet took over my sceptism. The aiptek arrived this morning. Straight out of box, software into machine, loaded successfully with Vista (although did get a message to uninstall my Wacom tablet which I ignored and also got a message that installation was incomplete). Ignoring both of these, the tablet was up and running with 10 minutes of being out of the box. It took a little while to work out how to use the extra 'buttons' but by trial and error managed it. And what a delight they are. YOu can set up to 20 personal links which can be to much used files, web addresses, programmes etc. All work perfectly. I have been touching up photos all day, and the only thing I notice about the tablet is that cursor gets stuck sometimes. All you have to do is press hard on the tablet and move the pen, and all is tickety boo. this is a fabulous product at a price that is unbelievable - and I shall be buying a second to replace my Wacom. How they pack so much functionality in, and provide such a good sized worksurface (the Wacom A5 can be restricting whereas the Aiptek is A4) I don't know ... but they certainly have a happy customer and will certainly look out for other products under their brand name

4.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Wacom alternative, 24 Mar 2008
By Christopher Walker "Digital Artist" (Sheffield, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well, like one of the other reviewers, I own the Medion branded version of this tablet. Exactly the same (only about £25 cheaper!), I even have the Aiptek drivers for it. Main difference is the color, the Medion is silver where the Aiptek is black.

It's my second tablet, upgraded from a HyperPen. The 600u has a nice, large work area of about 25.5cm x 16cm. For me the large work area was a must have considering my HyperPen was only 6 inches x 4 inches, and although people say that's fine, it wasn't for me. A Wacom of this size is going to cost upwards of £300, and for the majority of us we don't have that kind of money.

I'm a student (about to graduate) and was looking for a good quality, entry level tablet that would allow me to get better at digital painting.

This is where the issues arise that may affect people's decisions when buying this tablet. For me, as a PhotoShop user, I wanted to use it for painting. With both CS2 and CS3 (and latest drivers) the tablet performed poorly and would jump when making quick sketchy strokes. Resulting in a straight "jaggy" line instead of a smooth curve.

As any artist knows, the freedom to sketch is extremely important. I had to revert back to Photoshop 7 (much less memory hungry) to get the tablet able to sketch accurately. And now that I'm back in PS7 it works great and I couldn't be happier.

I can also say for you Corel Painter fans, it works perfectly with Painter IX.5 and X. Whatever lag there is in Photoshop is non-existant in Painter.

In summary, if you're a digital artist/student, who wants a large area tablet, but not willing to pay hundreds for a large Wacom. I recommend this. The pen is a nice weight, and the surface is so smooth, the pen glides across wonderfully and it's very accurate.

For it's price it's a winner IMO, and it will certainly see me through until I can comfortably afford a Wacom.

The Photoshop CS issue is why I haven't given it 5 stars.

**********************EDIT************************

Since this review was written, I've bought a new computer. Upgraded from a tired Athlon XP 3200+ to an Intel Quad 9550, and any issues I has with Photoshop are well and truly gone, even the latest CS4.

Since the review was written I've also started working in a 3D art/illustration studio where I have a Wacom Intuos 2 and there are other Intuos 3s around, and I have to say...I prefer my Slim Tablet. Wacoms are a bit like drawing on an ice rink. Can't get used to them at all.

I strongly urge anyone thinking about buying a tablet to try this one. There really isn't any noticable difference in resolution between this and a Wacom.

Would give 5 stars if I could change my original rating.
