5.0 out of 5 stars An important book for all Americans, 29 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This is an entertaining yet powerful overview of how the Constitution has been mangled over America's 200 year life. Reading this book will make abstract political or legalistic arguments very real and palpable to even the least politically interested reader. How many of our 'inalienable rights' have been stripped away by the runaway train of our government will become apparent, and how it has been spoon fed to us as 'in our best interests', or, more insidiously, 'to protect the children'. Were he alive today to see the shambles we have made of his thoughtful, simple, and brilliant propsals for government, this is the book Thomas Jefferson would have us read. It is quite startling how many Americans haven't even thought to question common assumptions about how our government operates. Many who read this book will be in for a rude awakening. It is a very, very important book, particularly in this day and age of our assumption of the government's doctirne of 'in parentis loci.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't say enough good things!, 8 May 1999
By A Customer
This book is an amazing piece on the matter of "consensual crimes". The combination of logical thought, and well-researched material provide for a dangerous opposition to the current laws.

Peter McWilliams touches upon such subjects as gambling, drugs, and prostitution to name but a few. He asserts the fact that prohibition can be counterproductive in many ways and inevitably fail to resolve what it intended. He fights to regain the personal liberties which were founded from this country and to prevent further injustices from occurring. Peter argues that the government is abusing the force of law to coerce moral values onto people. His views closely resemble that of the Libertarian Party.

This is a must read, I highly recommend this book to all...(from those who are unhapy with the current laws to those who absolutely defend the government). The modest price for the plethora of information is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Libertarian Awakening, 31 Dec 1998
By A Customer
This work is a thoroughly libertarian derived look at much of the way our society ought to operate. The author makes his case for ending the overprotection our government has developed by espousing a typical libertarian attitude. Such a view is fine with a few caveats. My main one is that we are our brother's keepers. To a certain extent.

Another is: One must be watchful that freedom to pursue a certain lifestyle does not turn into licentiousness.

I was thoroughly entertained by this book. Wish I could afford a thousand of them to give away to those who need to be made aware of the concept of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

I agree with most of his views and am NOT a libertarian but a socialist with a strong independent streak. I do most agree with his notion that consenting ADULTS should be left alone in most cases unless innocent parties are harmed. Of course, there are colateral issues but this is not the venue to discuss them.

The State has a definite responsibility to see to it that a line is well defined between individual actions and group influence. McWilliams defines these lines in a thoughtful, coherent manner.

A top notch book for readers mature enough to understand that there have to be limits for there to be a society, but even decisions for limits can get carried away.
