Singer and pianist Eden Brent (Little Boogaloo) from Greenville, Mississippi recorded this record in New Orleans with Canadian blues guitarist Colin Linden in the producer's chair. This isn't the smooth jazz of Norah Jones, Eden's voice is much raspier and the overall sound is rawer and more earthy, although the track "Leave me alone" does have the laid-back country groove that one associates with Norah. Eden writes eight of the songs here and her great boogie piano is very much to the fore - to the extent that New Orleans piano legend John Cleary is relegated to playing Hammond organ!

There is lots of variety here from the Dixieland of the title track, to the ragtime duet with Colin Linden on "If I can't", to the easy rolling New Orleans bounce of "Let's Boogie-Woogie". We also get a great version of Delbert McClinton's "Right To Be Wrong" and probably my favourite track the gospel ballad "Beyond My Broken Dreams" (with wonderful slide guitar from Linden). This is a very good, consitent collection of songs, right up to the final track "Goodnight moon" - a heart-wrenching, plaintive ballad with beautiful restrained brass.

I really like Colin's production which makes the sound nice and loose, as though everything was recorded live in one take. There is great playing from all the musicians, including bass player George Porter Jr, drummer Bryan Owings and the brass section of Tracy Griffin, Emile Hall and Jeff Albert. However, it is Eden Brent that is right at the centre of everything, with her fantastic bluesy vocals and her downhome piano she has delivered a great record here.

HASH(0x914e0df8) out of 5 stars New Orleans cathouse parlor style Blues 24 Jan. 2011

I've only ever had the pleasure of tooling up and down Bourbon Street - listening to the music coming out of the joints and popping in to one that sounded interesting - just once in my life. This album by Eden Brent sounds a lot like some of those swingin' New Orleans juke joints and the music couldn't be better.

I've always liked a piano that sounded a little funky and not so much like a Baby Grand... although I do love the character of its tone. Typically the upright piano produces that distinct 'get up and dance' kind of sound. I was just a little kid when Joanne Castle on the Lawrence Welk Show made me fall in love with that particular sound character in a piano.

Leon Russell, Elton John on some of his tunes, Dr. John certainly... all know how to get to that aural place and they know what to do when they get there. Eden Brent evidently knows the way, too.

Just sample the tunes on this one and see if you can resist putting it in your CART. I couldn't... and I'm glad I did.

Every time I listen to it, I feel better.

I closed my eyes and could smell the smoke and the whiskey in the bar. She sounds like she's been singing the blues for 50 years. Can't believe how young she is !

I bought this based on other reviews when she popped up on a page as I was purchasing a CD by Robin Rogers. Wow is all I can say about her voice and piano playing. I am sure there are the inevitable comparisons to Janis Joplin, but Eden Brent is her own entity. Loved this CD so much I ordered her Mississippi Number One and love it too. She has a big, soulful voice and I enjoy her writing as well. Buy this CD if you love Delta Blues.

On this CD Eden really lives up to her nickname Little Boogaloo. Every song here keeps you on the edge of your seat wondering how much powerful can the next song be. You will enjoy this! I'll give this CD a 5 rating and definitly recommend it to a friend .
