Good for Beginners 11 Mar 2011
By FLF
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book for beginners, it explains aikido, its history, its philosophy and does so in an entertaining way. Homma explains why techniques are taught which is as important for the beginner as the techniques themselves.

The only negative point is the lack of photographs, but this is compensated for by amusing line drawings.

Don't expect to learn aikido techniques from this book but do expect to learn a lot about aikido in a pleasant way.

Recommended.

This is a must read for those of who have been looking for a fresh approach to the martial arts. I first read the book and then had the luck to enroll in Gaku Homma's school. Aikido is something you can really approach with a beginner's mind and learn lessons for life.

I read this book on a train journey from Amsterdam to Brussels and I found it to be a delightful companion. The essence of the book is that Aikido is a Way of life (not just a philosophical way) and that Aikido is more than just a martial art or throwing people about.

It is a easy book to read, and I must say that the drawings are the most noticeable and endearing aspect of this authors books.

Simply, it is to be enjoyed and read again.
