I used to use pro-level DMMs. Recently I bought VC97and have been delighted with it. In use, it is better than the high-end pro-level DMMs I used 20 years ago. The display is bigger & clear. All the usual features are there plus temperature and - because it is auto-ranging - not many clicks required to select them - I love that feature. I was unsure about the need for the 4 input sockets at first but now consider that the best configuration - as it prevents accidental shorting when clicking through the ammeter settings, which could be quite nasty.

The case is looks good, being rubberized it seems robust and overall it quite big - I don't mind that, as the display is big and it makes it hard to mislay but your needs may differ. One trivial but annoying feature: the finger pull hole for the stand at the back is too small - stupidly annoying bad design but rather trivial in the scheme of things. The leads, plugs and the probes seem to be of decent quality (although not rated): the probes have a decent point & end guards & the sockets come with plugs to keep them in shape/protected. The cheap zip case provides welcome storage & a little protection.

Note: you need to press the blue button to use the continuity checker (bit crackly sounding) as it defaults to diode checking mode. Not obvious but it is documented in the instructions.

*Several other features are not quite as well implemented as on more expensive products. For example the continuity checker takes a while to buzz and then crackles - not a big deal, its good enough for a home user, but big name meters usually deal better with such things. But this seems like a great - probably unbeatable - combination of features and price for a home user. With DMMs though, you usually get what you pay for it seems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value ... why pay more 1 July 2012
This is a great value meter and important to bear in mind this is an EC Class II in terms of accuracy, most budget meters are Class III or worse.

It does all the key things you would expect ... V AC/DC A AC/DC Frequency, Diode test, Resistance, Continuity.

It does a couple of things that may not be on other units .. which may not be off interest ..

Capacitance (no real interest to me)
Temperature ... very useful, even include a temperature probe.
Transistor tester hfe ... I would be just as hppy using diode test function to test a transistor

PROS
Great Value (gets it 5 star rating for this)
For what it cost build quality seems good.
Built in rubber 'bumper'
Very Large LCD display
Reading 'hold' button
Auto Range
Continuity buzzer

CONS
The printing of some functions selected by dial is in blue .. and difficult to read in Low Light conditions.
The nylon zipper case is a low budget item .. and provides little protection and nowhere to store leads ... most MM cases allow leads to be stored in the case lid. This last item is annoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does every thing I need it to 23 Oct 2013

I'm not an Electrician but I sometimes need to measure voltage and resistance ,this does this and undoubtedly much more

The quality is good for the money and the leads are a good length , my colleague paid 80 quid for a meter that does exactly the same thing

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 3 Feb 2012

You only get what you pay for, there are meters and there are meters.

I got a 3 cheap ones fine for finding a faulty xmas tree light or checking an alternator charge rate, but on tv or computer repairs, if you test something and it tests faulty it is faulty and if you test a component and it seems good, it probably is faulty, depending on the meters impedance and other ratings it may not always give you the readings you expect, esp the tricky things like slightly leaking capacitors, diodes or transistors, this meter seems to this point been really good, i first used it on a Jvc with shut down problems and a beko set with exploding bridge, it seemed to pick up the faulty components where the cheaper meters seemed to indicate the components was still service able, so i know only use this one and this one only if servicing chassis boards and just use the others for automobile or for non complicated repair jobs where little expertise is needed.

It had a approx 20 day wait for it but it arrived in a day and a half, its got a lot of good features like manual or auto ranging, excellent leads, and every range needed apart from induction, but how many meters out there go to resistance to 40M, freq to 30mhz cap testing to 200uf with temp -40 to 1000 degrees, voltage to 1000v ac and dc plus diode transitor hfe etc for this price range.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good budget autoranging multimeter 2 July 2014
By aBc
These multimeters are actually made by Vichy/Vici. There is a very good review by mjlorton on a well known video sharing website for the VC97.

The model sold by Aidetek is described as the VC97+. I couldn't find any obvious difference when comparing the specs of the Vichy VC97 and Aidetek VC97+ except for the Aidetek PDF datasheet mentions an additional 400mV AC range, which contradicts what is quoted on Aidetek's own website.

I bought my Vici VC97 from a well known auction site for significantly less than they are being sold here. It was even shipped from the UK and arrived next day.

Build quality of the VC97 is fine when compared to other budget meters. For the price I paid, I don't think you can go far wrong for an autoranging meter for low power testing. I would not compare it to superior Fluke or Amprobe devices but then these cost at least twice as much to buy.

Voltage, current and resistance auto ranging measurements work well, compared to my 22 year old manual digital meter. Even the continuity tester performs well. These were my main requirements for a new meter.

Compared to my old meter, capacitance measurement is a bit disappointing - it was slow and unreliable with some large value electrolytic capacitors. The transistor tester is also a disaster in use - it will only work if the transistor has very long leads, as the contacts within the test socket appear to very deeply recessed.

The battery pack in my VC97 is an extremely tight fit inside the meter's compartment unlike the VC97 described in the above mentioned video review. Powered only by two AAA cells, I wonder if this is why it was disappointing when used to test electrolytic capacitors compared to the 9v battery fitted to my old meter?
