Having seen WeiWei's work over a number of years I was keen to see what this film observation could add to my understanding of the man and his work. My conclusion is: clever, erudite, successful manipulator of social media and successful at accessing and positioning himself in the global art market ............. a Chinese, Hirst, Koons etal ...

When imprisoned for 81 days there were a number of protests and it was significant that one observer stated that the protestors were very brave because they didn't have WeiWei's wealth and influence .............. having said that for me the most telling part of the film was the last segment when he arrived back to his 'gated & walled' home, at night having been released on 'bail' ............. he was clearly not the same man who had been abducted 80 odd days earlier and whatever threats had been made were controlling him.

WeiWei is a good artist, however, he is no poor martyr and we should not be guided to creating a mythology about the man ....

Is the film worth watching - yes.

Finally, I would like to say that the reviewer who gave the film 2* for technical ability should try 'watching' the film for content and message!

- I like art and appreciate this artist.
Yes, amazon should seek to support and disseminate this kind of cultural and artistic information ( I congratulate the Amazon). For example about others as Pipilotti Rist, or Rebecca Horn, or Nicolas Provost (...)

2.0 out of 5 stars Ai WeiWei needs to grow up. 10 May 2013

This chap isn't a hero, the authorities are not universally fascist/ authoritarian and the documentarian didn't do her job properly.

This is fiction, not documentary.

4.0 out of 5 stars A man and his Country 3 Jan 2013
Format:DVD
Klayman's film has enough material to fill scores of documentary, even going as far as including material from WeiWei's many revolutionary films. Having all this information about the personal, professional and revolutionary presents a fascinatingly complete documentary. She shows the public persona of the artist as the first man to speak out against the Beijing Olympics, the imaginative structural art he makes and the man behind closed doors. Above all it also offers a portrait to the political unease in China, the fight between art and public freedom and the role that Ai WeiWei and his peers play in this national agitation (its losses, the brutality of the state and the victims). Through the depiction of the state, it presents some suspenseful revelations. Ai WeiWei is a hero for the Chinese individual and Klayman does her utmost to present the most unbiased and human representation of this and the state of a nation. A bold debut film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Weiwei 26 Dec 2012
Format:DVD
A fascinating portrait of an important contemporary figure, which touches upon both aspects of his career - his artwork and his political activism.

Along the way, 'Never Sorry' provides us with insights into Ai Weiwei's early life, his family relationships and friendships, as well as glimpses into the international art world. The documentary's understated style makes the consequences of the police brutality and detention, suffered by Weiwei during its making, seem the more shocking. This, apparently, is 'business as usual' in China. The film also provides us with valuable insights into modern Chinese society, and records those events which have done much to fuel Ai Weiwei's activism.

Recommended viewing.

saw the film at the cinema, loved it, its a great insight into his work and his life , and as it was being filmed , he was taken into custody. there is some background history about his family and the politics , his time in new york , and some personal life , the sunflower seeds at the tate , very enjoyable film ( for art lovers)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ai Wei Wei never sorry DVD 9 Nov 2012
Format:DVD
A good film about this bravest of artists. It provides real insight into both Ai Wei Wei and the path China is now treading between freedom and tight state control. Illuminating.
