5.0 out of 5 stars A book to inspire any writer, 15 Jun 2004
This review is from: The Agony and the Ego: Art and Strategy of Fiction Writing Explored (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book years ago at a friend's house with no expectations and only a vague interest - I was temping at the time and writing was not really at the forefront of my mind, in fact very little was at my mind's forefront, for that matter - and was delighted to find it was a fantastic little collection of essays, elegantly compiled, none too long or dull and each filled with words of wisdom and ways of seeing things that could melt a seriously sizeable writer's block. Not only is it a great read, but it offers some fantastic insights into the minds of people who happen to be my favourite writers(my favourite essay is probably the one by Josephine Hart, who reveals how she wrote her first novel in a matter of weeks, which explains that book's incredible intensity and power), and even encourages you to explore the writing of those you hadn't heard of, which I think is a marvellous thing, being a total bookworm. I'm the sort of person who is always thirsty for something new to read and always wants to be surprised by new writing (and of course I am always pushing myself to find a better way to express myself, hence my decision to read this book) and yet I come back to these essays time and again because there is so much in it to think about. Truly splendid, I recommend it to everyone!
