Book Description

6 Aug 2009
This complete collection of Agnes Owens' five novellas opens with 'Like Birds in the Wilderness', a portrait of brickie Mac. He's a straightforward guy with a talent for laying bricks and a liking for the drink who decides to head to the oil-rich north to seek his fortune. 'A Working Mother' is a wildly entertaining cautionary tale: while Betty's husband Adam broods and drinks (to be matched at times by Betty, just to be sociable) she flirts with their best friend Brendan and tries to avoid the roving hands of her new employer. They're all driving Betty crazy. In 'For the Love of Willie Owens' takes a sensitive, canny look at wartime teenage pregnancy - as relevant now as ever. 'Bad Attitudes and Jen's Party' conclude the collection: both deadly, darkly funny stories about family relationships and love on the dole.

5.0 out of 5 stars Morality and Love in Hard Times 2 Feb 2013

Agnes Owens is at her best depicting young adults trying to find a way to build a life and nurture love in the midst of deprivation and frustration. Her writing is simplicity itself, and she's got a great sense of humor, yet she is brilliant at conveying every nuance of the anxiety, shame, hope and despair of her characters.

Long after finishing this collection I find myself thinking of her scenes of young Mac, a bricklayer, and Nancy, a secretary, tramping around the Scottish Northern Highlands (in her novella Like Birds in the Wilderness in this collection) in search of the mysterious guy who offered Mac a job. They are cold, hungry, thorn-scratched and bug-bitten, and the journey leads to one of the finest moral dilemmas in modern fiction. This collection is a great read.
