4.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Agile for BI/DW 3 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Other books written by this author are referenced but it doesn't revere you to have read them first. Even if you haven't read, or have any previous experience with, Agile development before it takes you step-by-step through the considerations for dredger taking Agile in the BI arena. That said, I think you should have some reasonable overview knowledge to enable you to skim through some of the sections which can be a little 'over-wordy'.
Some good techniques in here to apply when breaking down the user stories and developer stories to enable you to still retain a focus on delivering business value through each iteration. I'll certainly be referring to these on future projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for all DWBI professionals 27 May 2013
By Hans Hultgren - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book by Ralph Hughes should be on the desks of anyone working with data warehousing and business intelligence (DWBI). There is a learning curve and challenges to working with Scrum - for example calculating the velocity of a new team - or - establishing the level of detail in an action plan - or - determining the specific responsibilities of various team members. Ralph does not "touch on" the topic but rather "dives in" and explores it thoroughly - providing you with the recipe as well as the ingredients for success. This level of rigor and diligence is also representative of his approach to the development of this book. The content in this book is based on real world experiences that Ralph has traveled the world to gather. Buy this book if you want to learn - and want to know how to deploy - agile project management techniques in your data warehouse business intelligence (DWBI) program.

If there is one other thing to say about Ralph (and this book) it is that the material is viable and current. The material in this book is not based on ideas from ten years ago but in fact ideas that are viable today and most likely will be equally viable ten years from now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone involved in DWBI 15 Mar 2013
By Product Review - Published on
Data warehousing is a challenging business venture. Following a traditional waterfall development methodology typically leads to multiyear projects that somehow in the end fail to deliver the desired business value. In Agile Data Warehousing Project Management, Ralph has brought a refreshing new strategy to this evolving world of business analytics!

By utilizing Scrum the project team can reduce typical costly overhead activities and focus on delivering business value in several short iterations. By actively engaging the business client as an essential member of the project team throughout each iteration the functionality delivered can immediately be used to support current business process and be used to strengthen the next set of deliverables.

If you are venturing into the data warehousing world for the first time or are currently managing an active project, you owe it to yourself and your team members to read Agile Data Warehousing Project Management.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Coverage of Project Mgmt for DW 25 April 2013
By Data Guy - Published on
Ralph Hughes' Agile Data Warehouse Project Management (ISBN: 978-0-12-396463-2) addresses the challenge of managing a data warehouse project and asserts that agile techniques can be used to successfully drive warehousing projects.

Data warehousing projects are different than other software development projects and, as such, should be approached using different development and management techniques and processes. The book is not another "what is data warehousing" book nor is it another "agile development" book. Instead, it marries the two together and shows the reader how data warehousing can succeed using agile project management techniques (such as Scrum).

The author explains how a project team using Scrum can help to achieve a quicker time to delivery and reduced costs -- the holy grail of project management. Anyone who has worked on a data warehousing project knows that it can be a monumental undertaking. Agile Data Warehouse Project Management by Ralph Hughes (published in 2013) offers up an approach that can minimize challenges and improve the chance of successful delivery. And that is worth reading if you are currently, or about to start working on a warehouse project.
