4.0 out of 5 stars Clinton at bay., 13 Jul 2005
This is the first Bob Woodward book I have read, and I was impressed by his vivid, down to earth writing style.
What shocked me about the events described is the way Clinton's legislative programme was killed off in his first 100 days in office, mainly by the lack of Senate support from his own party.
Time after time we read of humiliating meetings where he tries to offer compromises to Democratic Senators in exchange for their support ( these meetings were rarely successful).
There is no evidence of a "Whips Office" or any other means of compelling them to vote the party line.
The impression created is that US Senators see themselves primarily as one man pressure groups for local interests, Democrat and Republican are merely labels of convenience, and do not carry any obligation of party loyalty.
Clinton himself seems likable but weak, tending to hold the opinions of the last person he spoke to.
All in all, an excellent book. I will certainly read more by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bob Woodward does it again., 26 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Agenda (Audio Cassette)
Once again Bob Woodward has managed to produce a first-rate narrative on intricate political matters. He cuts through the smoke surrounding the Clinton whitehouse and examines what the goals where, whether or not they where achieved, and when not. It is in this regard that his talent for personal faults and misjudgements comes to its full use. One would only wish that he had taken a bit moretime to examine the motives and judgement of Mr. Clinton.
