5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best., 13 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Firstly, let me say that this is a great game. Its predecessor was good fun, but was looking very dated. Fortunately AoWII has bang up-to-date graphics, superbly strategic gameplay, a cunning AI, a great campaign and an interface thats simply a joy to use.

Ok, Ok, so you've probably figured out its turn based by now. If you don't play turn based games generally, but fancy the idea of pitting your whits againsed EXTREMELY cunning computer opponents in a game of strategy, this could be for you. Especially if you liked any of the Civilisation series, of which AoWII incorporates many elements. In fact there are quite a few elements in AoW2: City Building, Resource Management, Diplomacy (both internal and external), Magic, technology development, military expansion and religion all form part of the game-play to a greater or lesser degree. The default game mode is 'simultaneous turns' which allows for real-time gameplay to a certain extent. Players can react to one anothers decision in the same turn.

The fantasy setting is very well implemented, with colourful, truly jaw-dropping graphics, decent sound and music and loads of ambient animation going on. You don't expect a strategy game to use a lot of graphical system resources, and as long as you have a 16Mb 3Dcard (yes, thats right, a 3D card!) AoW2 should run be fine.

Theres 20 or so (great) campaign missions, roughly the same number of equally well designed stand alone missions, and a mission editor. With a burgeoning on-line community churning out new missions and campaigns of exceptional quality, AoW2 will be on your hardrive for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probebly one of the best, 7 Aug 2004
First off, this game is one of the best of it's genre I have played. You should definatley buy it if your into turn based strategy games. Most people when they see the words turn based, groan, but I swear, this game will change your opinoin on that. It had a good storyling to it that will keep you into the game for long sessions. And if you get bored with that then there's skirmish modes and multiplayer modes to indulge in.
The graphics in this game are simply superb. Normally in strategy games, graphics are never one of the better points but this game turns the tables and boasts stunning spell effects a detailed textures. You can even see the individual stones in the bridges. Though this is only at high resolutions. Though the word high means anything inclduing and over 800x600 pixels.
The game also boasts a good soundtrack. Not exactly listening material but it suits the game, all fantasy tracks, which really pull you into the atmosphere the game possesses. But other than the game's own soundtrack, you can also put your own mp3s for the game to play by putting it into the songs directory in the game's directory. This means you can create your own atmosphere to it!
Now the actual gameplay. The gameplay, though quite challenging, is really good. You can choose a start race from a wide range of fantasy races, and you don't even have to stick with them! You can change to some other race, or even be both, or all three, or all of them if you have enough diplomatic might to prevent them from squabbling.
All in all, this is a really great game, a must buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good fun, but seems like I've been here before..., 9 Jul 2002
By A Customer
Simply put, you capture a town, build it up, capture or build other towns, get into scuffles with the bad guys...

Overall, it's not bad - the graphics are fairly good, the spell effects are nice, but at the end of the day, it comes down to "unit rushes"...for example, you spend 20 turns building up your city to find that the bad guys have spent the same 20 turns building 20 cheapo archers, who then come and wipe out your city defenses - what was the point? Ok, you have heroes with additional powers, but they're just as easily killed as your most basic infantry. In this respect, I found it very similar to the Might & Magic series, Age of Kings, C & C, etc. - the upshot is that you strike first and strike while they're weak, which makes the town building almost superfluous.

My verdict? It's quite good fun and it looks nice - some of the units (especially the high level ones) are well done - not much strategy required, and it forces you into playing in a particular style - there are some good points, but not enough to make it really stand out in what is becoming an ever-increasing crowd...
