Product Description

Product Description

The Pictish nation, forged in the shadow of the Roman empire, was the dominant power in northern Britain for more than five hundred years. Much has been written about the archaeology and culture of the Picts in recent years, but the historical problems have received less than their fair share of attention. In this book, Dr Cummins attempts to redress the balance. He provides a fresh look at the whole Pictish story, placing it firmly in its true historical context and reassessing topics such as the legend of Drust son of Erp and St Columba's mission to the Picts. There are unusual but useful comparisons with contemporary events in Wales and England as well as new and controversial interpretations of Sueno's Stone and Pictish symbols, and a fresh explanation of how the Scots took over Pictland in the ninth century AD.

In this wonderful book, Professor W. A. Cummins collects all of the information known (as of 1995) about the Picts, the people of ancient Scotland. In the first eight chapters, the author examines what is known about the Picts, taking each subject one at a time to produce a clear and concise analysis of the data. The remaining ten chapters examine the Picts through a historical prism, showing how they interacted with neighboring peoples, and what those interactions tell us about the Picts. The crème de la crème, though, are the three appendices. The first two deal with the lists of Pictish kings, while the third analyzes the 30 Pictish "kings" who all have the name Brude.

This is a wonderful book, and an excellent resource! The author does speculate, drawing inferences carvings and so forth, but he does leap out into transoceanic empires and so forth that are presently so popular in some books. Instead, this book is a wonderfully readable book, which covers its subject in a scholarly manner. I highly recommend this book!

The poor old Picts have been a bit of an oddity in the realm of early history - lots of myth and not much fact. At the same time they haven't had the heavy Eng Lit treatment as equally mirky King Arthur. I wonder if it would have been a different story if Mallory had had a fascination with the Pictish King Lists?

W A Cummins does a great job in this volume of making the most of what information there is. A very nice, plausible reading of Sueno's Stone (my favourite Pictish monument on the edges of the Moray Firth). If you don't know much about the Picts - shame on you and you might as well start here!

A valuable insight 21 April 2012

I thought that this book was excellent. The layout was good, the logical progression between chapters well thought out and the speculations valid without being over-committed. I particularly appreciated the thorough examination of the Pictish king list in the appendices. Overall, a stirring evaluation of the importance of the contribution of the Picts to Scotland's history, bringing sometimes characters with the scantiest trace in documented history to life as individuals of skilful diplomacy or tactical nous. Highly recommended.
