5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Board Game!, 30 Dec 2008

What a great game!

It is refreshing because there isn't just one way of winning. You can try a whole variety of strategies and it isn't until the very end of the game that you find out who has succeeded.

There is also a lot of interaction between the players in terms of blocking each others access to resources and undermining their strategies.

There is no dice throwing, but there is sufficient luck in terms of how strong native resistance is whilst discovering new territories, to enable younger / less experienced players to have a chance against older or more experienced players.

A couple of words of warning - the previous reviewer stated that the rules are quite clear and easy to understand, but they also recommend playing a few turns on your own. I whole heartedly support the need to 'have a practice' to properly understand the rules. Although the rules are fairly brief they don't always make perfect sense until you have laid out the components and tried to carry out the steps described.

What we did, was play a couple of rounds to get the hang of the basic rules / game play, and then had a proper game. We then found out we had been doing things slightly wrong and it wasn't until we played a further game that we were playing the game correctly. Looking back through the rules it all makes sense, but the way in which they are written means they aren't the easiest to pick up and apply.

The quality of the board, counters and plastic figures are excellent, and I can fully understand the price. Many games are of a similar price but the components are of far lower quality.

All in all, this is now one of my all time favourite games up with the likes of the Civilisation board game. It also has the benefit of being a better two player game and being of shorter duration. In fact let's just put it at number one!

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as board games get!, 22 Oct 2008

I just bought this a few days ago after seeing the high ratings it had on boardgamegeek http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/22545

Put simply this game is just brilliant. Pretty simple to pick up, tons of depth and replayability, and scales down to 2 players really well.

I'd reccomend playing through a few turns on your own to pick it up, and then trying a 2 player game, The rules are clear and easy to understand, although theres are a few steps to remember (these are clearly pointed out on the back of the manual though)

I'd recommend following the above link for a full review

Definitely worth £35, all the compenents are durable and well made. Believe me you'll be reaching for this each time while monopoly and cluedo are gathering dust

1.0 out of 5 stars Over Complicated , 2 April 2009

This was a present for my son who had played the Play Station version, and so in an effort for some non-screen based activity that the whole family could share we got this game.

It took days to understand how to start the game, and even longer to play, over complicated for my 10 & 12 year old and even the adults struggled to get the point of it.

Play safe and stick with Monopoly if you want family fun or try "Blokus" if you want to teach strategy and forward thinking to your kids.
