a personal favourite 18 Jun 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
An odd film made when Michael Powell retreated to Australia, following the controversy surrounding his Peeping Tom film. This film is influenced by Shakespears The Tempest in theme (which was apparently an unfullfilled dream project of Powell's), and is a colourful and effervescent little film in which a wondefully crusty James Mason plays an artist going to live on a supposedly deserted island to paint some masterpieces. Instead there is an assortment of odd bods about, the most devine being Helen Mireen (her film debut?). He is tempted by her, and how could he not be. Never has an actress been so comfortable looking on screen whilst nude. Her glorious natural assets make the current silicon set look quite ridiculous. This is not a Powell masterpiece, but a personal favourite. Filmed on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Poor. 21 Mar 2011
By RBA
Format:VHS Tape
This film is unworthy of James Mason's talents - made all the more strange by the fact that he also co-produced it. His Australian accent is dreadful, the three supporting Australian characters are cartoons, the direction is sluggish, the narrative is weak and the 'comedy' is bad sit com. Even the paintings of this, so called, renowned International painter, display the amateurishness of the whole project. The only delight is the young, physical, Hellen Mirren. My copy is going straight to the charity shop, as a curiosity!

Powell Pressburger Perspective 26 Nov 2007
By G. Varga - Published on Amazon.com
Format:VHS Tape
I watched this film after having seen many of the truly outstanding Powell Pressburger WWII vintage films. These are truly archival superb films. Powell was ignored after his heyday, and similarly James Mason made Georgy Girl, but was considered past his prime at this point.
Helen Mirren at 29 in this film had not yet come into her own. Famous for fine acting and "getting her kit on" (nudity without hesitation), she was never a ravashing beauty, but had a youthful and robust appeal. She is extensively nude in underwater swimming scenes, and otherwise here.
This story is not the entertainment here, but watching each of the above work is fascinating. A youthful and naked Mirren is delightful. James Mason is still fully present and the charm of a story unlike most make everything all worthwhile.
I believe Powell has made a film unlike his masterpieces, and working out of his element, he does not make the transition successfully. It is a weak film with wonderful and unique finds for fans of films. Time capsule of sorts that fills in some of the gaps of a well rounded film experience.

This movie is a gem 24 April 2009
By Greg Reyna - Published on Amazon.com
Format:VHS Tape
Rarely do we see such fine actors as Helen Mirren and James Mason in a character study so simply mythic. To my eyes, Ms Mirren is a rare beauty, and in this movie the filmmakers had the good sense to show her in all her youthful glory. Here too, James Mason is at ease, in a role where he is often the only person on screen. His natural grace and sense of play is evident. Maybe it's that sense of play that I appreciate so much about Age of Consent. It's a crime that this film is not available on DVD.
An early Helen Mirren film 21 Mar 2012
By M. Oleson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:VHS Tape
I was watching the "Rotten Tomatoes" TV review show and the couple do a segment called "where were they then" which flashes back on famous actors. On the episode the actor was Helen Mirren who had a new movie coming out where she plays a prostitute wrangler in Nevada. Dame Helen has never been prudish as most people know given her star treatment in "Caligula". This film is her 4th and came out in 1969, so that makes her 23 when she made it.

She plays a girl of about 17 who comes into the life of a famous artist played with his usual aristocratic way by the late great James Mason. Mason's character heads out to a remote island off the coast of Australia for some peace, reflection and to do some work. He meets young Helen and asks her to pose. Now here's a surprise, the artist never makes a play for her even when she...uh, disrobes. Well, not until the end of the movie that is when things just seem to workout.

I was surprised that Ms. Mirren, while certainly older now, pretty much has the same body she did in 1969, sort of Reubenesque you might say. The film has its moments but the story between virginal Helen and worldly Mason is constantly interrupted by a handful of irritating characters thrown in for comic relief. I just found them annoying.
