Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2.4 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by artist Norman Lindsay, "Age of Consent" features Mason as successful painter Bradley Morahan. Disillusioned with the commercial and dispassionate turn his career has taken in New York, Bradley decides to return to his native Australia to recapture the artistic freedom and inspiration he had as a young man. Retreating to an island on the Great Barrier Reef, he unexpectedly finds his inspiration in Cora (Helen Mirren), a teenage girl on the brink of womanhood whose only guardian is her perpetually drunk and abusive grandmother (Neva Carr-Glyn). Cora is secretly trying to save up enough money to escape from her grandmother and find a job as a hairdresser on the mainland. Bradley pays her to pose nude for him, producing the best work of his life in the process and simultaneously inspiring her to embrace her sexual allure. ...Age of Consent (1969)

I first saw this film at high school age, back in 1968. The director had updated a Norman Lindsay story to the then modern setting of a Great Barrier Reef island. I now live in this area and know that the simple rustic charm of the backdrop and people of this film belong to the past, but this does not detract from seeing the film again. It has a light hearted touch and is never too far from a gentle eroticism that does not stray beyond naughtiness. Helen Mirren in one of her very first screen roles is delightful as the free spirit island girl who naturally becomes the muse for the artist getting away from it all on the island.
This is not a deep or very serious film, which is all the more reason for still retaining its ability to be a good movie matinee experience. Transfer to DVD from old film stock results in some grain, but the quality and colours are generally very good.

Age of Consent 13 Nov 2011
Format:DVD
In spite of the scandalous looking title, "Age of Consent" is not about a woman losing her virginity or a lolita-type relationship (because Helen Mirren looks underage the same way that Anne Hathaway looks underage). "Age of Consent" is simply about an artist (James Mason) searching for his artistic inspiration in Australia and finally finding his very own muse named Cora (Helen Mirren) who does a lot of naked posing for him.

Now if you are looking for a thought provoking or profound film about the human condition, "Age of Consent" is not for you. But if you already had a few beers on a Friday night and are looking for some light entertainment with a bit of charm, then this film is just right. "Age of Consent" has everything you (as one of the guys) would want to see in a film after getting drunk: a funny dog (Godfrey, who almost steals the show), a naked 24 year old Helen Mirren, lots of nature, some amusing locals, a naked 24 year old Helen Mirren, more nature, marine life and oh yes, getting to see 24 year old Helen Mirren nude! It is not a masterpiece, but I have to admit I watched "Age of Consent" to the end.

Avoid! 8 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
This long awaited release is an utter disappointment, not for the picture quality - which is crisp and bright, but for the unforgivable way in which the picture has been chopped in order to con the public into believing they are getting the original aspect ratio as seen at the cinema when in fact all they are getting is the pan & scanned 4:3 ratio which has been further butchered by masking off about a 6th of the bottom of the picture to make it fit the so-called 'widescreen' TV ratio of 16:9.
If a movie is filmed in 'cinemascope' then it should be released as that - in true 'letterbox' format & not the all too common cheap option of butchering further an already cropped picture.
Another wasted opportunity sacrificed upon the altar of the 'quick buck'. PATHETIC
