Age of Conan + Rise of the Godslayer---Great fun,
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Age of Conan : Rise of the Godslayer (PC DVD) (DVD-ROM)
Having been an early adopter of Age of Conan ( I bought it on day of release, June 2008 ) and played it for the first 3 months of the games life, I was forced to stop playing as the game seemed ridiculously unstable, often BSOD-ing the PC, or locking up during a loading screen.I loved the world design and the unique combat, which is easily the most involving in any MMO I have encountered, ( for your reference that would be WOW, LOTR, City of Heroes, Everquest 2, Warhammer online) and the community seemed just that bit more mature than a lot of the WOW crowd. But, reluctantly I gave it up and moved back to WOW. Which I love by the way. Roll on two years, to mid - September 2010 and I decided to take a plunge into AOC again, this time with Rise of the Godslayer. After an install of approx 45 mins and a patch I renewed my subscription and jumped in. Just a quick note here, try to buy Rise of the Godslayer gold edition if you are new to AOC, as you will get the Age of Conan install disc, Godslayer install disc AND 30 days gametime included, not sure if you get those things if you just buy the Godslayer expansion The gameplay is balanced, the graphics excellent , the quests competently done and the community, for the most part, friendly, helpful and chatty. The population is nowhere as big as WOW ( on CROM server at least), and Crom is a PVE server, the only English speaking PVE server available, the other is a English speaking PVE-RP server, which I have not visited so can't comment on the population. All the other servers are foreign language PVE and the majority are PVP. So to finish, this isn't a review about the details of the game, but rather comments about the Age of Conan experience in 2010. Writing this review two weeks after my restart and I have to say what a massive change for the better Age of Conan has gone through. Stability issues seem to have been addressed, the draw distances now stay constant, everything loads faster, and it just seems to run smoother in general. I have found myself sucked into this game hook line and sinker, so much so I have just taken Funcom up on the extra special subscription deal ( that stopped on 30 September ) to pay £68.00 for 14 months subscription, and get lots of in game goodies thrown in as well. It's that good ! Buy it now and I'll see you on CROM server. 3/10/2010- update to above post. Very briefly, AOC is a great game, but grouping at levels of 70 and below on the CROM server for instances and zones is almost non-existent. Be warned, this game is for all intents and purposes a very good single player experience with a chat room attached. Yes, you can solo to 80, but this is supposed to be an MMO. Anyway, treat the game as single player, and it's highly enjoyable. You will however, likely never see the inside of an instance or play a zone in epic mode and get the drops associated with such things. As far as my review scores for this game go:- " **** " Four stars for single player. " * " One star for multi player AGE OF CONAN - A SINGLEPLAYER MMO.

one of the best online game ever,

Visually, the game still looks superb. With the addition of DirectX 10 compatibility a year ago, everything is sleek, shiny and hi-res. The landscapes are vast and full of little hidden details, from the remains of a horse and its unfortunate rider that tumbled down a mountainside to shrines carved into rock faces. The music is also extremely high-quality. Each new track is well-composed and arranged, many with an eastern flavor, and each suits its environment and context. The music, for me, was the strongest stand-alone aspect of the expansion, in factFuncom have put a lot of work into Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer, and it shows. There is a great deal of polish to the landscapes, the music is exceptional, and there is simply a lot to do. Where Age of Conan falls short is in variety, and if reputation grinding is something you cannot abide - and for many MMO players, it is - then Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer is not your expansion. For everyone else, the alternate advancement, new dungeons, factions, and the land of Khitai are all good reasons to return to Robert E. Howard's brutal world.

This game was great fun and a perfect choice for someone seeking something a little more mature compared to other MMO's. I had a few problems with technical issues but support was in general very good and it is only lack of access to reliable/fast internet that has stopped me from playing.
