I thoroughly enjoyed these CDs. I've been a fan of Penelope Keith for many years, and think this role - as a kind of latter day Miss Marple - is the best thing she's ever done. She plays a high-powered businesswoman who moves to the countryside and finds she doesn't really fit in, so she has to cheat to get noticed. In the first story, she enters a local baking competition with a shop-bought quiche...only to discover she's poisoned the judge. And in the second, all the villagers have fallen in love with the handsome local vet...who again gets mysteriously murdered. These are very light-hearted murder mysteries: think 'Midsomer Murders' on radio, but the character of Agatha Raisin is such a glorious creation: she's feisty, ballsy, chain-smoking, totally un-PC, and yet somehow incredibly likeable. I was very sad when I got to the end of these, and intend to treat myself to the next lot!

Like the first reviewer I discovered this audio Cd quite by chance and treated myself to it as an Xmas gift. i think what makes theses first two stories so appealing to the listener is the full cast recording. The variety of voices adds to the narration and you find yourself drawn into a story which inevatably will lead comparissions to a modern day Miss Marple.

Of the two books here, for me the first, Quiche of Death is the best. It's a great scene setter and introduces you nicely to all the principal characters. The second disc I didn't enjoy as much possibly because it's a darker story so it lacks the humour of the first book but that shouldn't necessarily detract you from enjoying it as well.

Books three and four have now also been released on a double CD, using the same cast.

Agatha Raisin stories are great. We only discovered them after receiving the CDs as a Christmas gift. Hopefully there will be plenty more to come. The stories are very entertaining, and funny too. Penelope Keith plays the part brilliantly. If you are looking for something really different, then look no further than the adventures of Agatha.

Agatha Raisin: The Quiche of Death and the Vicious Vet: v. 1 (BBC Audio Crime)
This is a must if you travel any distance. Listening to this in the car makes my daily 60 mile drive enjoyable. You don't have to be an Agatha Raisin fan to enjoy. Penelope Keith is just right - Agatha Raisin comes alive!! Would highly recommend. I'm looking forward to buying the next one.

I am not familiar with the MC Beaton stories so took my chances based on the general outline of this audio CD.
My money was well spent. Both my wife and I enjoyed both stories which were well acted, presented and, for us Brits living in Canada, very "homely"
Excellent subtle humour typical of Penelope Keith.

We have now purchased another of these Agatha Raisin CD's.

I bought this for my mom who loves reading the books. She loved listening to this and thought it really brought the characters to life.

I have been reading M C Beaton's books and had heard some of the radio dramatisations before buying the CD sets. I always have in my mind a picture of Penelope Keith when reading the books and being familiar with her voice it all now fits in place. I liked the books because of Agatha Raisin's attitude to life and what it throws at her. I think the dramatisations have captured the spirit of Agatha but it is not exactly like reading the book although as individual drama's they are very entertaining hence I feel this set is worth 5 stars. I loved the idea of murder by quiche and the vicious vet was a nasty piece of work. The atmosphere is also right and I am enjoying Mrs Bloxby and look forward to her on going support for Agatha. Value wise these 2 CD sets are good value and you should look to the box set if wanting to obtain all 10 dramatisations.
