Review

"* 'Agatha Raisin is sharp, witty, hugely intelligent, unfailingly entertaining, delightfully intolerant and oh so magnificently non PC. M C Beaton has created a new national treasure... the stories zing along and are irresistible, unputdownable, a joy. If you buy one book a year, let it be this. Agatha Raisin is The Strongest Link.' - Anne Robinson * 'Beaton's dry sense of humour and her unflattering but affectionate portrait of gruff, often adolescent acting Agatha make this... tale a bloom worth picking.' - Publishers Weekly"

5.0 out of 5 stars James goes missing 30 July 2011
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Agatha's marriage to James Lacey has not started off very well. They are living in their own cottages and he seems to be having an affair with Melissa Shepherd - a glamorous newcomer to the village of Carsely. Then James disappears, having been attacked and Melissa is found dead. Agatha is immediately suspected as is the absent James.

Sir Charles Fraith comes to Agatha's aid and together they try to find the murderer and track down the missing James. Both tasks prove difficult and dangerous. I enjoyed this story because it develops the relationship between Agatha and Charles as well as Bill Wong. There are plenty of suspects as no one seems to have liked Melissa very much even though on the surface she seemed quite charming.

There are some dark undercurrents to the story though it can be read as light entertainment as well. I enjoyed it - even on second reading. Maybe not a good one to start with if you have not tried the Agatha Raisin series as you need to know a bit more about the main characters to understand all the nuances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agatha Raisn and the Love From Hell 10 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I LOVE Agatha Raisin books - for me they are the perfect antidote to stress. The Washington Post's review sums them up perfectly " Like Lemon Meringue pie. Light and fluffy but tart at the heart." and so they make me smile and relax. Each book follows a similar process/theme but this one was so ridiculously unexpected in places it was quite outrageous. Liberties are occasionally taken with the plot but as long as you enjoy them for what they are, I think they are a fun, pacey read with quite complex plots at the heart. Much more tongue in cheek than Agatha Christie's dramas, deliberately much less serious - almost, I feel, as though they were designed to take the mick out of Miss Marple but then became successful and had to carry on being written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Am I mising something? 13 Feb 2013
By Jane Baker VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
My local library has a shelf of Agatha Raisin books. They fly off the shelves at my local charity bookshop so I felt I should look see what's inside. I know the adage about judging a book by its cover but the covers of these books have always sent an anti-message to me. I have now read one. It didn't take long. Style simplistic, plot likewise, characters bland. A very undemanding read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agatha Raisin and the Love from hell 12 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Once again M C Beaton has got you in her clutches. After waiting for so long for Mrs Raisin to become Mrs James Lacey, they turn out to be mis-matched and, following a blazing public row in the local pub, Mr Lacey suddenly dissapears leaving lots of blood on his doorstep and, Agatha is in the firing line of suspects. James, it turns out, has sought refuge in his favorite monastary in France and Agatha does her nut trying to find out where James has dissapeared to. Following on from that ---- no suggest you read the book. I promise that, if you have read all previous books in the Agatha Raisin series from 1st to this one, you will be hooked and will not be able to put the book down until you also have solved the murder/s.

Like everything else written by MC Beaton, the story easily flows. Among the local odd balls, our heroine triumps once again

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy reading escapism 27 Feb 2013

As always - an easy, undemanding read about a very human heroine - just what's needed at the end of an exhausting day. And I always look forward to her next adventure.

Agatha Raisin's eleventh outing as amateur detective finds again mixed up in murder and mayhem.
However, there are similarities to the previous book with Agatha's close call with the murderer. This disappointed me that it was virtually the same situation....
However, as always, M C Beaton (and Agatha Raisin) provides a quick, enjoyable and easy read with a plot that keeps you guessing until the very end. Overall, the book is a good addition to the extensive Agatha Raisin series.
I would not recommend reading this book if you had not read the previous books in the series.
