Book Description

27 May 2010 Agatha Raisin
Drowned brides are like buses: nothing for ages, then two come along at the same time ...! Abandoned by husband James, Agatha hops on a plane to the South Pacific, hoping to mend her broken heart. But there she meets a happy honeymooning couple, for whom disaster strikes when, tragically, the bride drowns. Back home, alarm bells start ringing for Agatha when a woman, dressed in a wedding gown, is swept down river. The police say suicide, but Agatha, spurred on by recent memories, particularly her own disastrous marriage, sets out to prove them wrong. Praise for the "Agatha Raisin" series: 'Sharp, witty, hugely intelligent, unfailingly entertaining, delightfully intolerant and oh so magnificently non-PC, M.C. Beaton has created a national treasure' - Anne Robinson. 'M.C. Beaton's imperfect heroine is an absolute gem' - "Publishers Weekly". 'The Miss Marple-like Raisin is a refreshing, sensible, wonderfully eccentric, thoroughly likeable heroine' - "Booklist". 'Once started, you'll have a job to put it down until you've finished' - Amazon reader, Kent. 'Another wonderful tale about Agatha and her chums ...Long live Aggie!' - Bookworm, Essex.

Review

"* 'Agatha Raisin is sharp, witty, hugely intelligent, unfailingly entertaining, delightfully intolerant and oh so magnificently non PC. M C Beaton has created a new national treasure... the stories zing along and are irresistible, unput-downable, a joy. If you buy one book a year, let it be this. Agatha Raisin is The Strongest Link.' - Anne Robinson * 'Beaton's dry sense of humour and her unflattering but affectionate portrait of gruff, often adolescent acting Agatha make this... tale a bloom worth picking.' - Publishers Weekly" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars a bit wet 27 July 2010
Format:Paperback
Oh dear my second and I fear my last Agatha Raisin. This appears to be the twelfth in the series I had previously read the first one which I enjoyed. It just seems to be more of the same. It comes across that Agatha is still a cranky older woman in a series of unfulfilling and unsatisfactory relationships which colour her view of the whole world. The murder story was good but the back story kept getting in the way for me. Perhaps it is aimed at a different market. Dare I say older women in search of murder story with a little romance? I suppose it fits the bill.

3.0 out of 5 stars WE ALL GET OLDER AGATHA, GET OVER IT! 29 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback
This is only my fourth Agatha Raisin book but I'm afraid that I am becoming tired on her constant whining over her advancing age and physical attractiveness (or lack thereof). I do realize that this book is #12 in the series and follows the departure of James, her now ex-husband, who left her to join a monastery (of all things) and the marriage of her latest paramour to another woman. One can understand that she might be a bit lacking in the self-esteem department and the fact that she signs up for Pilates classes and undergoes a beauty over-haul are understandable actions as is her get-away vacation to Robinson Crusoe Island.......but all that incessant kvetching about men, her looks, her age and her love life begins to wear a bit thin.

Upon returning from her island trip torrential rain and flooding strike her village and Agatha sees the body of a young woman clothed in a wedding dress floating down the river. She recalls the woman from an incident that occurred during her visit to the beauty salon the previous day and, being Agatha, feels she has carte blanche to investigate the girl's death. As usual, she is warned by the police "not to interfere" with their investigation.......a warning she promptly dismisses.

The usual characters are all here as well as a couple of new ones like John Armitage, a successful mystery writer, who has conveniently moved into the house next door and is thereby available to assist Agatha with her investigation as well as play a part in her romantic fantasies. The mystery itself if pretty simple and the police are predictably obtuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE DAY THE FLOODS CAME .... Agatha Raisin 24 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
This series of books about AGATHA RAISIN are worth their weight in gold! Agatha is a puzzle, she tries so hard to find herself a good man all the way through this series, unfortunately she tries too hard sometimes. She gets up to all sorts of things, she is a member of the Church Ladies Group in her village and her good friend is the Vicar's wife unfortunately the Vicar does not share his wife's thoughts about her! Agatha always tries to please and things go terribly wrong, she is looking for her "place" she is use to being her own boss in her own Public Relations Company but now she is living in a little village and she has to fit in. She wants adventure and love which is right on her own doorstep, unfortunately it is not that easy and she is lead off into some interesting and funny adventures.
The books are a breath of fresh air - funny and friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, Aggie! 15 Mar 2010
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Agatha Raisin returns once again for a mystery outing. She is now divorced from James Lacey, who is now a monk, and Sir Charles Fraith has got married to a French woman. Determining that her new next door neighbour will be an old fat little man she takes herself off on holiday. Whilst making friends on holiday she sees a couple that look at bit suspicious. When she returns home to Carsely she gets an email saying that the woman of the suspicious couple has been drowned by her husband.

Agatha gets the same vibe about a couple in Evesham, and then one day when there is flooding Agatha sees the girl of this couple, Kylie floating dead down the river in a wedding gown clutching a bouquet. With what she had found out about the couple on holiday Agatha is determined to start her own murder investigation. Employing the help of her former employee, and her new neighbour Aggie is soon on the case. With a near miss in a hit and run, and the bodies mounting up could Agatha have chewed off more than she can swallow?

As usual Agatha goes charging around like a bull in a china shop, upsetting people and getting herself into danger. This is a classic Raisin story, and once again you get the feeling that although Aggie does all the snooping and legwork that ultimately the vicar's wife, Mrs Bloxby consciously or subconsciously leads Agatha in the right direction. A must have for all Agatha Raisin fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars AGATHA RAISIN NOVEL - THE DAY THE FLOODS CAME 20 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
I PURCHASED A SET OF AGATHA RAISIN BOOKS AND COULD NOT PUT THEM DOWN. I BOUGHT THE REST FROM AMAZON AND AGAIN FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO STOP READING THEM. THEY ARE ABOUT MURDER AND THE FEMALE LEAD CHARACTER IS REALLY FUNNY AS SHE DOES NOT CARE WHAT SHE SAYS TO ANYONE. GREAT READ.
