Christopher Gunning must be one of the best composers working in British TV. His wonderfully atmospheric music was one of the many triumphs of ITV's "Poirot" series and is sadly lacking on the newest episodes.
This CD contains a number of the slower and darker pieces used in the series. I was hoping for some of the understated and yet somehow sumptuous arrangements heard in the background on the series, but some of the ones here are darker in tone, being the themes to darker mysteries and danger.
Having said that, there are lighter pieces, which includes some beautiful music. "A Country Retreat" is a lovely pastoral piece, evoking the dignified air of Styles, that solid and oh-so-English house (before the murder took place!). The jazzy "Height of Fashion" brings to mind something the D'Oyly Cartes might stage in wonderfully stylish surroundings.
Even the darker pieces I didn't enjoy so much on first listen are wonderfully atmospheric, and the CD as a whole works very well, with one flowing to the other.
There are some great moments on this CD, not least an extended version of the main theme music, and all Poirot fans will no doubt find something to satisfy.
