Atmospheric 24 Mar 2011

Format:Audio CD
Christopher Gunning must be one of the best composers working in British TV. His wonderfully atmospheric music was one of the many triumphs of ITV's "Poirot" series and is sadly lacking on the newest episodes.

This CD contains a number of the slower and darker pieces used in the series. I was hoping for some of the understated and yet somehow sumptuous arrangements heard in the background on the series, but some of the ones here are darker in tone, being the themes to darker mysteries and danger.

Having said that, there are lighter pieces, which includes some beautiful music. "A Country Retreat" is a lovely pastoral piece, evoking the dignified air of Styles, that solid and oh-so-English house (before the murder took place!). The jazzy "Height of Fashion" brings to mind something the D'Oyly Cartes might stage in wonderfully stylish surroundings.

Even the darker pieces I didn't enjoy so much on first listen are wonderfully atmospheric, and the CD as a whole works very well, with one flowing to the other.

There are some great moments on this CD, not least an extended version of the main theme music, and all Poirot fans will no doubt find something to satisfy.

I can't believe many dedicated Poirot enthusiasts were gratified by the contents of this CD. Which explains why it was the only one released (in 1992) and on the strength of rarity value alone is now selling (used) for over 20 pounds.

The problem seems to emanate from Christopher Gunning himself who produced this 60 minute CD as a showcase for the original scores he wrote for the more macabre episodes rather than provide a pleasant listening experience with variations on his great Poirot saxophone theme popping up in different guises. As it does in most light-hearted sequences when Poirot and Hastings are on vacation or hunting down fleeing suspects.

Instead one gets almost continuous ominous chords which work very well on the screen but make for a mostly turgid 55 minutes after the title music - which is followed by a scarcely audible track "One-Two, Buckle-My-Shoe".

In my youth it was standard practice to alternate fast and slow numbers on pop LP's. Which might have been influenced by classical composers knowing listeners need relief after a busy first movement. As Mr.Gunning is a classical musician I'd have though he'd adopt the same procedure and give Poirot fans much more of Stan Sulzmann's lilting alto saxophone embellishments in-between the 9 saxophone-less tracks he's justly proud of but when heard one after another do less than justice to the overall good humour in nearly all Poirot episodes.

My general disatisfaction with this CD led to resorting to making a 90 minute tape from DVD's capturing a true "Poirot mood" with the inclusion of one Poirot sentence - which immediately identifies the scene and doubles the enjoyment of listening to Christopher Gunning's less profound but far more satisfying background snippets - with the incomparable Salzmann alto always to the fore.

With Poirot addiction holding fast all over the globe I would hope Mr. Gunning might consider the possibilty of producing another CD. This time emphasising his once-in-a-lifetime Poirot theme - giving us all the variations he probably already has stored away on master tapes.

My Daily Poirot Fix 20 Aug 2010

Thus CD by genius Christopher Gunning provides the melodies I crave from the TV series "Poirot", and is of excellent quality. It makes great background music anytime.
