DVD Description

Celebrated actresses Julia McKenzie (Cranford; Notes On A Scandal) debuts in the role of world-famous crime writer Agatha Christie's shrewd and inquisitive Miss Jane Marple in this stunning set of brand new murder mysteries. Miss Marples sweet old lady exterior hides an excellent perception of human nature and a razor sharp intuition for solving crimes - murderers underestimate her at their peril! These beautifully shot films boast exceptional international casts and high production values.

This DVD contains the following murder mysteries:

A Pocket Full Of Rye
Businessman Rex Fortescue (Ken Cranham, Rome) is poisoned, and found with a pocketful of rye in his jacket. Inspector Neele (Matthew McFadyen, Pride and Prejudice) is called to investigate, ably assisted by Miss Marple, but the call comes too late as Rexs cheating young wife Adele (Anna Madeley, Sense and Sensibility) is also found dead. The question is, who will be next? The impressive cast also includes Rupert Graves (The Forsyte Saga), Helen Baxendale (Cold Feet),Wendy Richard (EastEnders), Prunella Scales (Fawlty Towers), Ralf Little (The Royle Family) and Ben Miles (Coupling).

Murder Is Easy
Miss Marple charms her way into the peaceful village of Wychwoodunder-Ashe to investigate a series of murders, and is befriended by Luke Fitzwilliam (Benedict Cumberbatch, Atonement), a handsome former policeman. But amongst a succession of sudden deaths, and a local election, Marple prepares to deliver a secret so shocking the village will never be the same again. Also starring Margo Stilley (9 Songs), Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter), Anna Chancellor (Spooks), Hugo Speer (Bleak House) and Jemma Redgrave (Cold Blood).

They Do It With Mirrors
When Miss Marple goes to stay with her friend Carrie-Louise, she soon realises that all is not well. Not only is this the family home, but it also serves as a rehabilitation centre for delinquent boys. But then an attempt is made on the life of Carrie-Louises husband, her step-son is murdered and someone tries to poison Carrie-Louise. Starring Joan Collins (Dynasty), Maxine Peake (Shameless) and Penelope Wilton (Pride and Prejudice).

Why Didnt They Ask Evans?
As the sole witness to a dying mans last words--Why didnt they ask Evans?--Bobby Attfield is determined to solve the riddle they pose. Forming an unlikely alliance with socialite Frankie Derwent and visiting family friend Miss Marple, his resolve is strengthened when someone tries to kill him. A trail of clues leads them to Castle Savage and its inhabitants. Starring Rik Mayall (The Young Ones), Richard Briers (Monarch Of The Glen), MarkWilliams (Harry Potter; The Fast Show) and Samantha Bond (James Bond).

I think that Mckenzie's interpretation of Miss Marple is gleaming. I loved all the actresses who played Miss Marple ( probably was less keen on Geraldine Mcewan ) However, they all imparted their own interpretation of this lovely shrewd little lady from St Mary Mead. I have only managed to see the Mckenzie version of 'A Pocket full of Rye'. I like to read the novels and then view the television ( in some cases film )and then judge them against the novel. I thought that ' A Pocket full of Rye' was most suitably adapted to the screen. I have viewed the Hickson version of the same name as well as having read the book years ago. I liked the actors employed too. I thought Mary Dove could have been cast as more old-fashioned though. Julia was as gentle as Miss Marple could have ever been. My favourite Miss Marple is undeniably Joan Hickson, but I appreciate other actresses interpretations too.

I'm sorry people don't like Julia McKenzie in the role. To be honest I was surprised when she was cast, because she's someone I didn't think old enough, though she probably is. This is an incredibly talented actress, who not only acts, she dances, sings, directs, produces all sorts of projects and is a general all-rounder.

I don't think there'll ever be a Miss Marple that fits in with anyone's idea from the books. Much like Poirot, who David Suchet took to his own, but Albert Finney probably inhabited better (though he was annoying). So whether you go for Margaret Rutherford's jowels, Joan Hickson's old 'bird' impression, Angela Lansbury's trying to get past some risible writing in the film, Geraldine McEwan's odd casting and the liberties they took with some of the plots, or Julia McKenzie's interpretation with some more liberties, it doesn't matter. The overall strength of Christie's writing, even when it's been through some very modern interpretations, still works. She never considered herself a very good writer, and there are some very odd moment in some of her books that wouldn't get past the PC brigade these days, but they last. And they'll probably still be remaking them with Amy Winehouse as Miss Marple in decades to come and Matt Lucas playing Poirot.

But I'm glad they're still making the series. Yes, they're not deep and meaningful, but they do provide a welcome break from reality TV. Go for it, I say. Unless they cast Katie Price in the roll, I'll still keep watching. And it's good to find a role that needs to be played by an older actress, who isn't still trying to kid the world they're still in their forties when they look like a trampoline under so much pressure one false move and their face could take out anyone in the vicinity.

Not too bad
No one can ever replace Joan Hickson as Miss Marple but this is the best one so far. I really didn't like any of the others. I hope she will do more of them.
