Product Description

Diversity. Inclusiveness. Equality.—ubiquitous words in 21st-century political and social life. But how do those who police the limits of acceptable discourse employ these as verbal weapons to browbeat their often hapless fellows into having a "real conversation"? How do these terms function as mere doublespeak for the expectation of full-scale capitulation to the views of "right-thinking people"? Those who have long been afraid to touch the issues that attend these words will take great reassurance in an articulate statement of the kind presented in Against Inclusiveness, where the author's approach is sober and extremely well reasoned, as he attempts to marshal truth and fairness as criteria in the examination of issues critical to modern social life.

Kalb argues that in current inclusiveness ideology, "classifying people" becomes an exercise of power by the classifier that denies the dignity of the person classified. All rational consideration of human reality is thereby suspended, and the result is something arbitrary and increasingly tyrannical. Against Inclusiveness lays the foundation for what an honest, forthright, real conversation on these matters might look like.

More About the Author

James Kalb comes by his interest in political theory naturally, through politically active parents, a degree in mathematics from Dartmouth College, and a J.D. from Yale Law School. His parents showed him the importance of participation, mathematics showed him the value of correctly stating principles, and Yale Law taught him the method of studying cases to find the argument that always wins.

His further studies of liberalism include living the New York yuppie lifestyle (big law firm, row house in the Park Slope area, kids in private school, driving a Volvo, chomping arugula). Through it all he kept asking himself why everything he was told seemed so unanswerable when it was so obviously wrong.

A child of the '60s, his response was to turn on, tune in, and drop out: he dropped out by leaving the practice of the law, tuned in by becoming a moderately rad-trad Catholic, and tried to turn on his fellow man by writing The Tyranny of Liberalism, a study of our present political, social and moral situation, what is wrong with it, and how to get out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love a good analysis! 31 July 2013

Diversity, inclusiveness, and equality are all about us in 21st century life. Kalb elucidates why we should not simply embrace this verbiage and what is fed to us as these "ideals," but instead have a real discussion about what they mean and how this will all spin out.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Folly of Abolishing Distinctions 27 July 2013
By Thucydides - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Kalb has presented a devastating critique of the utopian project of trying to abolish normal cultural and sexual distinction in the pursuit of a misguided notion of equality. Such distinctions are too intertwined with human life to be ignored or made irrelevant. In fact, the attempt to do so simply leads to their replacement with other distinctions, based on wealth, educational credentials, purported expertise, and bureaucratic status - distinctions which serve the interests of a new class.

This project destroys true community while claiming to pursue it, and results in alienation by reducing people to interchangeable ciphers, stripped of all constitutive particularities.

In the interests of freedom and well-being, we need to return to a better balance between understanding man as an individual and as one constituted by his relationships.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this if you want answers 30 Dec 2013
By G in Ohio - Published on

Do you want to know why being "diverse" and "inclusive" means silencing large numbers of people? How being "tolerant" came to mean condemning vast numbers of people? Why it's so important to people in government and education that groups (racial, economic, etc.) "succeed" in certain proportions rather than that individuals succeed according to their abllities, inclinations, and drive? You will find cogent answers to these questions and more. These are not unforeseen and unexplainable social developments, they are (Kalb shows) required by a philosophy that is now dominant in schools, government, and corporations. It is totalitarian, based on groups, and dependent on a certain kind of education and approach that ignores (and must suppress) everything that contradicts it.

Most importantly, unlike many similar books that aim at diagnosing social ills, Kalb gives some substantive and practical suggestions about what to do to combat this seemingly inevitable change in the way our country thinks and acts. If I could, I would buy this book for everyone I know and make them read it. But that would be totalitarian of me...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Diversity Inc. and How it Destroys Liberty 14 Nov 2013
By Karen Kelly - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There was nothing explosively new in this book - that has not been written about in other books, magazines, and online journals. However, there is a lot of original insight and new perspectives on the subject. It's worth reading particularly for anyone who is new to Diversity Inc, and the secular State Religion of Multiculturalism.

Against Inclusiveness:How the Diversity Regime is Flattening America and the West and What to do About It by James Kalb.
This is my first attempt at a book review - I am filled with trepidation. The book captured my attention the moment the author related how two very prominent Liberal elites lost their jobs by making seemingly rational comments that offended the sensibilities of the politically correct mafia currently running our country.
As I proceeded to read further my interest intensified. It is not, that, the material that Mr. Kalb writes about is new - it has been widely discussed. The difference is that the author presents the material in a logical, intelligent, and persuasive fashion. To a non-intellectual like myself, this book is chock full of common sense! It has a ring of authenticity that cannot be denied. Simply stated, Liberalism has failed to produce the results its champions claim it has. Instead, it has evolved into the same intolerant ideology that marked the other failed -isms, namely Fascism, Nazism, and Communism.
I believe this book should be read by every thoughtful American, regardless of political affiliation or religious beliefs. Our rights are being eroded by an elite minority reminiscent of the Russian Politburo.
The author is to be highly commended for his courage and boldness in tackling such an important issue.
PS - A note about the publisher - Angelico Press. This is the third book I have read that is published by this company. The first two - To Know Christ Jesus and Theology for Beginners both by FJ Sheed were absolutely terrific. I have often considered that perhaps I should "catch up with the times" and buy an E reader. But, Angelico Press has imbued these books with a certain warmth in a tactile and visual sense that enhances the act of reading - a warmth that an E reader could not possibly duplicate!
