Review

In AFTERWARDS, we see a master's touch on every page. Uncompromising emotional impact, a poet's sonorous style and a gripping story all come together to make this a transcendent literary experience. I guarantee this novel will touch everyone (Jeffery Deaver )

Extraordinary...heart-stopping...[an] ingenious thriller (Mail on Sunday )

I became insanely gripped ... The word compelling is used lightly of mystery and crime novels this one will define it for you (Daily Mail )

In a LOVELY BONES-style conceit ... Lupton works her theme of the corrosive effects of ambition with insight and gusto (Guardian )

The smartly crafted characters create an addictive whodunit ... [it] flits between a fast-paced criminal investigation and the beautifully written musings of Grace as she hears that she and Jenny will probably never wake up making this an unmissable read (Heat )

Loved THE TIME TRAVELLER'S WIFE? Well this is even better (Company )

Compulsive reading right from the start ... Pacy and compelling (She )

As with Lupton's debut SISTER, AFTERWARDS has bestseller written all over it. She has found a way of combining searing emotion with page-turning plotting (Daily Mirror )

A bold, impossible-to-categorize, and riveting blend of psychological suspense, literary thriller and the paranormal ... wickedly good (Seattle Times )

Lupton's dexterity at handling the subplots and possible suspects is dazzling ... [she] creates such lovely, believable feelings in all of her characters, that what's ostensibly a supernatural story feels very, very human (Oprah.com )

5.0 out of 5 stars Could not put this book down 11 Jun 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
What would be a great thriller has an added twist with the narrator of this story who has tried to save her daughter in a fire. We know from the first page (so its not a spoiler) that she is talking to her husband while her body lies in a coma. Grace can follow the investigation into the arson attack although no-one can hear her and the development of the story is detailed and well thought out.
I am not a fan of ghost stories but this was not one and was an excellent twist on an excellent story. What is a thrilling thriller has emotion added due to this format. And I wept at the end!
Or I would have done if I had not been dishing up tea with the book in my hand - couldn't put it down!
Definitely a book of the year for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Afterwards 18 Jun 2011
By Jkings
Format:Kindle Edition
This book has become one of the most moving and beautiful books I have ever read. Despite the inevitability of the ending the twists and turns made this an exciting read. The journey Lupton takes us on is heartbreaking and so real. I sobbed at the end and have thought about it for days afterwards. This book will stay with you for a long time after you have finished it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply compelling 1 Nov 2011
By Helen
Format:Paperback
My bookaholic, 11 year old daughter recommended this to me after nabbing it from my Mother-in-law on holiday. Yes I know, she probably should not have read it. However, she's more mature than a lot of adults I know and she wants to read 'the world', so who am I to stop her. Some may say a crime thriller is not suitable for an 11 year old but there's nothing in this book that would not come up in a PG film and the rare use of bad language - nothing more than I know she hears at school. Indeed, I think I'd prefer her reading this type of the book than the endless stream of vampire books aimed at her age group these days. Her recommendation was perfect. I have not been able to get into a book for some time but this book just draws you in. The beautiful, sometimes heart-breaking, descriptions of profound love that a mother holds for her child were both subtle and extremely moving. The way it is written is unusual and interesting but it is easy to find the 'out of body' experience believable (if a little convenient).

The plot unfolds with enough red herrings to keep you guessing and my theory for 'whodunit' - and there's more than one 'it' involved here - changed several times. What I really loved about this book was the juxtaposition of the tenderness of the main character's feelings to all whom she loved and the evil cynicism of the crime that was committed, which sits there coldly next to you as you read. The yin and yang of it all works perfectly and the courage of the narrator/main character makes you feel you are right by her side and there's no way you'll leave her till the end of the book.
Loved this so much I have now started 'Sister' and am just as enthralled at the halfway point -in fact probably more so.

So well written. I couldn't put it down. Great characters and the mystery became second to the real plot of looking for happiness and finding courage and bravery in all forms.
