The "Colonisation" sequence takes up the story in the 1960s, with the frustrated alien Lizards' conquest forces still struggling for control of Earth as their civilian colony ships arrive. By book 3, Aftershocks, the Greater German Reich has finally been nuked to a standstill, Chinese Maoists still revolt against Lizard rule, Japan has atomic weapons, the Soviets are playing devious games under President Molotov, and the US has gained a foothold in space.
There's a soap-operatic tangle of plot strands, with established characters both human and alien meeting in ever-changing combinations, much blackmail and smuggling of ginger (to Lizards, a powerfully addictive drug), and flashes of everyday job-hunting, friendship and romance. Big questions loom: which country attacked the colony ships and must pay heavily for it? Where is the one nuclear weapon captured by Jews 20 years ago? Will the Lizards cut their losses by reducing Earth to radioactive wasteland? And just what is the US doing so secretly in the asteroid belt?
Little jokes appear amid the suspense--for example, the Warren Commission has nothing to do with Kennedy's assassination but is a Lizard team investigating the shocking actions of this world's US President Warren. The ironies grow less striking as we move further from real-world history, but it's a solidly enjoyable SF read. The story will be familiar to any of you who have read any of the other books. The Race still want to control earth and still always seem to be one step behind. How that is as the human leaders still seem to be more interested in getting each other in trouble and looking after there own interests as opposed to joining together to save earth, is a bit of a puzzle. So overall a bit like books 1 to 6, just a matter of wondering who will get the best of who.
There are though a few new twists, we get the full story of the German/Race war at the end of the last book, find out more about the American space ship, have the Race wondering should they destroy earth so as to protect the Race.
These and the stories of the individuals are what keeps the book going. On the whole though a very good series that I feel should soon be brought to an end as it now seems to be past its best.
He continues his flitting between characters (a turtledove trademark) and the story is well written and engaging but you have to read the first two in the trilogy.
I would rate the whole Colonisation Series highly. I would say it is just as good as the original World War Series.
If you like turtledove you will love this set.
Aftershocks continues on the same vein as the previous books with short snippets telling the story of numerous characters and their role in the world following the arrival of "The Race" during World War 2.
The author does tend to concentrate too much on the ginger smuggling trade for my liking. However his style of jumping from one story to another within just a few pages does mean that you are never far from the parts of the story that do interest you.
If you have enjoyed the previous books in the series then you will enjoy this one. However despite this being, apparently, the last book in the Colonization series don't expect all the story lines to be resolved. Indeed on a global scale, with the exception of the lizards relationship to the US, very little seems to change from the beginning of this book to the end.
If you are expecting a conclusion to the story, as I was, then you may be disappointed with this book. However I have no doubt that fans of the series will enjoy it.
Hopefully we will not have to wait to long for the next book, though whether this will be another Colonization book or, more likely in view of the ending in Aftershocks, a new series set towards the end of the 20th Century, only time will tell
