This is a rare album where each individual track alone would warrant the purchase. Nick's mastery of several instruments: guitar, mandocello, violin and lap dulcimer is impressive enough but the delicate skill he demonstrates accompanying himself within intricately layered loops is mesmerising. There are clearly folk roots to most of the works but there is something else in the style and production that is easily identifiable but hard to define, other than to say it's Nick Pynn. The opening track `Feu de joie' sets the scene with an energetic violin piece which captures the listeners attention. What follows will draw you in to a journey of sadness and joy expressed by captivating composition and musicianship. It's hard to pick a favourite track, some will immediately grab you and others will sneak up on you from behind. I don't understand why I'm not writing the 10th 20th or 50th review on this instead of the first. If you like new ideas and excellent musicianship in folk, world, classical, jazz or otherwise I'm sure there will be something here for you.
